An Assortment of Things

Well, there is not too much really going on. Billy has made a handful of playing appearances with other musicians as of late. He really does seem to venture out and apparently loves to socialize - I don't know if he ever spends time at his CA or TX homes.
---
Titles for six of the songs on the new album are now known:
1) "I Wish I Was Born a Mexican"
2) "Flyin High"
3) "Have a Little Mercy"
4) "More Slower Blues"
5) "Future Blues"
6) "Chartreuse"
---
Billy is on the cover of the latest issue of "Guitar World". There is a short article featuring an interview with Billy, focusing heavily on the upcoming new album. There are also some very interesting studio photos, showing Billy sitting and playing guitar, Dusty laying down some vocals, and Frank at the mixing desk. Hard to believe but we may see a new album in the next three or four months. Can't wait.

Sweet Sweet Memorabilia

Here is a link to some really cool rare ZZ items. Does the Antenna album cover really stem from a 1983 fan club poster?

Senor Volto edition: "Sad Passing"

Hubert Sumlin 1931 - 2011

Sadly, the blues world lost another great this week when Hubert Sumlin passed on at the age of 80. Born and raised in the South, Hubert moved to Chicago in 1953 to become a part of the great Chicago blues scene. Hubert was Howlin’ Wolf’s guitarist in the1950s and backed up him until Wolf’s death in 1976. He also backed up Muddy Waters for a short time in the 1950s. ZZ Top has often cited Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters as influences, so they no doubt crossed paths with this great musician. BFG pays respect to Hubert at http://www.examiner.com/local-music-in-new-york/hubert-sumlin-an-appreciation .

Hubert influenced guitarists around the world including Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Page. The home page of his website http://www.hubertsumlinblues.com has some sweet words from Toni Ann Mamary who became his caretaker after the death of his wife. There page http://www.hubertsumlinblues.com/biography.html also contains more information about the man.

The video lesson at http://www.guitarworld.com/video-hubert-sumlin-blues-guitar-lesson with Hubert from Guitar World will surely make you smile.

Hubert Sumlin was truly a blues great that will surely be missed.
