Confirmed: ZZ Top on iTunes, four new songs

Confirmed!!

ZZ will release four songs from the upcoming album on iTunes. This will take place on 2012-06-05.

*******

"Tuesday, June 5, will see the release of Texicali, a four track digital collection from ZZ Top that offers the first new studio recordings from “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” in nine years. The four new songs, available from iTunes and all digital retail outlets, offer a preview of the group’s full-length album, as yet untitled, that will be released on American Recordings late this summer or early fall.

...All four tracks will be previewed through an audio stream at Rollingstone.com for one day only, Monday, June 4.

These four tracks that comprise Texicali, like the forthcoming album, were co-produced by Rick Rubin and the band’s Billy F Gibbons and include “I Gotsta Get Paid,” “Chartreuse,” “Over You” and “Consumption.”

“Based on the visibility of the ‘Gotsta Get Paid’ song, we decided to make available more of a taste of the album than just the one song,” said American’s Rubin.

Notes Gibbons, “We were itching to get some new music out before the full album release; making available these four tracks seems like a good way to accomplish that most expeditiously. Dusty, Frank and I are happy with what’s been accomplished in the studio so we figured we’d provide some hot and tasty ‘hors d’oeuvres’ before the main course is served this fall.”

iTunes Release in June

Several media sources have indicated that ZZ will release a four song collection, apparently all from the new album, through iTunes in June. No other info is available at this time. If you find anything please comment.

ZZ Top Mashantucket, CT show review 05/27/2012

Courtesy of Clay G., here is his review of last night's show. Many thanks Clay for your wonderful contributions!

---

The Gang of Outlaws tour rolled into Connecticut on Sunday night May 27th for the third stop of the tour. The vibe was different this night perhaps due to talk of a new album coming soon, a brand new commercial airing for Jeremiah Weed and an opening night report of many deep cuts being rolled out. Are they finally breaking out of the oldies slump? Alas, they came close but ultimately left us wondering yet again. I'll skip Ms. Wilson and 3 Doors Down although they both did nice sets. Everything was running on time tonight. During intermission no playing of Flyin High with about 15 minutes between sets - enough time to check out the merchandise. How sad it is to see ZZ going back to the XXX cover for a tee shirt and just putting the 2012 tour dates on the back. $40? We miss you, Bill Narum. The Z cattle brand or the Pin Cushion voodoo doll would of made a great graphic.
The Foxwood MGM has a huge stage at the Casino, very deep and wide. 3 Doors Down placed the drummer toward the back. Even with 5 guys they seemed lost on the big stage. ZZ set Frank up about half way to the front on the small tear shaped riser with the same brown skull kit and gong which he never uses from previous tours. In front of the drums there is a black floor mat/ rug running almost the length of the stage . First time I have ever seen this. Same two iconic microphone stands as previous tours.
9:00 pm exactly -show time. I have never seen Billy and Dusty milk the opening walk to the microphones so slowly - slow motion. That set the pace for the night - I have never seen less movement from them. The sound was fantastic all night - they nailed it right away on I Thank You. Highlights for me were Mississippi and Vincent. Great to see Nationwide and Cheap off the set list. It would have been a great night except for some reason the boys left out Heaven, Hell or Houston, Sloppy Drunk and BBQ from the set list. Believe it or not they left the stage at 10:06 pm - 66 minutes in total. What a Shame!
A couple of unplanned items - after Jesus Billy says "wait a minute" and he goes off stage for 90 seconds. He comes back and says "I forgot my tuner - but who cares, it's Rock and Roll". A missed opportunity for a bass and or drum solo, instead Dusty and Frank just waited. After Tush during the bows a black dog Franks? ran out on the stage, Billy almost trips over him or her.
Guitars - they start out with the new Jeremiah Weed guitars. Billy goes to a Gibson Melody Maker ( comments that it was his first guitar - although I doubt it had the custom pin striping). Dusty goes to his new black bass. Billy played the encore with a Les Paul. It's funny how he has Bolin make the lightest guitars but yet wears so much junk around his neck.
In summary, looks like a lot of thought has gone into this tour. Same cast ( Elwood, Pedro etc) but all new video, from what we could see in the cheap seats blocked by the speakers . Wonder if something was wrong with one of them last night. This had makings of being spectacular - but 66 minutes, come on guys!

Manchester, NH 05/25/2012 Show Review and Pictures

Here is senior contributor Senor Volto's final show review and analysis of the opening night of ZZ's Gang of Outlaws tour, which proved to be a most unique and satisfying endeavor for all.

---

The lights dimmed for ZZ Top at 9:45 – they were supposed to start at 9:25, but someone from the arena told me that Gretchen Wilson started 20 minutes late.  The show started with the familiar boxing ring bell and the howling wolf with the techno music.  But that’s where the similarities to last year’s show ended.  The tumbling dice speakers were replaced by one 4x12 speaker cabinet on each side on Frank’s drums.  There was the big “lite-brite” screen in the back, and there was a new small “lite-brite” screen on each side of the stage.  The overall light show was improved from last tour.  They showed a “Gang of Outlaws” fake movie trailer showing the names as cast members over images of the desert to some pretty melodramatic music.  Then a lady on screen from the cast of the “movie” called “The Blonde” introduced the band (the ZZ Tops).  The big screen then said that the following performance was rated ZZ (Suited for Tone, Taste, and Tenacity) as the boyzz snuck into position on the dark stage.  When the lights came up Billy and Dusty were in position wearing plain black suits with hats on (Billy was already wearing his Blues hat) and Frank had a dark grey T-shirt on.

The first surprise of the setlist was when the band started with “I Thank You”.  Billy and Dusty’s singing was soulful as they harmonized well and Billy’s first solo was gritty and dynamic.  ZZ was playing at a lower volume than 3 Doors Down, and the overall sound was great and Dusty’s bass and Frank’s kick drum were really thumping.  Billy and Dusty started the night with the Telecaster-style instruments (with matching pickguards) that looked like the instruments used at the Houston Rodeo earlier this year.  Billy’s guitar featured the longhorn near the neck.  They went right into Waitin’ For The Bus without stopping and then slid right into “Jesus Just Left Chicago”.  Again the bottom end of the sound was powerful and Billy’s leads were crisp and inspired.  Billy then asked if we were having a good time and said they were going to tear the place down.  They went into Pincushion that featured Dusty punching out the bass notes on his guitar neck during the interludes.  Billy took off at the end of Pincushion with an extended solo that showed he meant business.

The next event has become a fairly regular event at Top shows as Billy picked a First Album out of the front row (out of about ten albums being waved around) and had the band sign it.  He finished with his auctioneer bit as the crowd ate it all up.  He then said “Just Kidding” and handed it back to a girl in the front row.

The surprises continued as he said “this makes us want to go back down to the Mexican border.  Let’s go way back!”, then they ripped into “Heard It On The X”.  Billy and Dusty traded vocals as Frank blasted away on the drums.  The crowd around us really got into it as was singing along with gusto.  Dusty was doing his howling and catcalls.  It was just under 3 minutes of furious playing that ended on a dime with Billy and Dusty standing about three feet apart with their arms crossed in Xs.

The next setlist surprise was “Vincent Price Blues” from Rhythmeen.  Billy said it “should be from a Halloween movie”.  Dusty and Frank’s thundering low end went right through our chests in the third row.  Billy’s plaintive singing was great, but the highlight was his guitar playing showing off all his tricks – gritty rhythm, slow twisting phrases loaded with vibrato, blasts of notes, and just the right amount of feedback.

Then they went totally off the grid.  Billy called Vincent “kinda spooky blues” and then asked “Shall we get really weird?” and said “Here’s a song about where we came from” and they went into what s thought to be the live debut of the obscure “Heaven, Hell, or Houston” from El Loco.  The lite-brite showed the lyrics and I was totally thrilled by the choice of this song.  And it sounded very good – Billy’s vocal was processed, but it was definitely not a tape.  Although the crowd seemed to be caught a little of guard by this one, it was a great surprise.

Billy and Dusty went for a guitar change as Billy switched to a vintage sunburst Gibson Melody Maker with pinstripe accents, and Dusty went for a black Fender P-Bass (not sure if it was his new Fender Custom Shop model).  They used these instruments right up until Legs.

The next delight was My Head’s In Mississippi.  The first verse was just Billy and Frank and Billy let the crowd finish singing the verse.  Then the whole band blasted into the complete song.  Billy played soaring leads for some of his best work of the night.  The timing was perfect and the crowd around me was totally into it and singing along.  The final guitar solo was great as the band finished the five-minute beauty with a quick false stop, Frank’s quick drum fill, and then the final beat.

The next setlist surprise was Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers as Billy and Dusty again traded vocals.  This time Dusty’s vocal seemed down in the mix – he did motion to the sound crew at the side of the stage.  Billy’s leads again were smoking.

The final surprise was “Stages”.  Dusty was thumping away on the bass, and his vocal seemed to be back in the mix.  The crowd was rocking along as the band played a very confident version of this one.

The Eliminator trio was next.  Gimme All Your Lovin’ featured Billy’s pinch harmonics at the end and was followed by Sharp Dressed Man and Legs.  The highlight of the Eliminator trilogy was Billy’s extended guitar solo at the end on Legs, which of course featured the fur-covered guitars.  The band hustled off stage at the end of the regular set.

For the encore, Billy and Dusty were wearing the Mariachi jackets featured on last year’s tour.  Billy went with the sunburst Gibbons Lucky Mojo guitar (Gibson Les Paul copy), and Dusty went with his blonde Fender.  They started with the La Grange/Sloppy Drunk/Bar-B-Q.  Since Bar-B-Q was omitted on recent tours, it was a nice addition. Billy threw the bottle over his shoulder to Pablo (who had to make a nice catch).  The final number was Tush, where Dusty gave it his all.  The band pounded away at the encores leave the crowd screaming for more.  At the end of Tush the boys took a bow, left the stage and the house lights came right up.

I thought it was a great show.  The band seemed to be having fun, the playing was inspired, and the new set list was dynamite.  This show features songs for the causal fan as well as the hardcore fan.  Some may have been disappointed (no Pressure, Sunglasses, Nationwide), but this setlist will be a welcome change for those that were tiring of the 2009-2011 song list.  I was hoping to hear some new music (25 Lighters?), but I will gladly trade that for an obscure nugget like Heaven, Hell, or Houston.  Besides, they will play the new songs in the future, perhaps later on the “Outlaws” tour or during the solo shows later this year.  As far as the Gang of Outlaws tour, I could see the paring of Top with Gretchen Wilson, but 3 Doors Down was not a match in my eyes.

Five (5) Days and Counting; Set List live updates

Well, May 25th is rapidly approaching and with it the opening night of the Outlaws Tour. Dusty has indicated that the band spent several weeks rehearsing for the shows - this could be normal, or it could be a good indication that they actually pushed to be creative and try out some new stuff, as well as some "new" old stuff. They are the main band on the bill so a full set list should be featured. I already took a stab at a possible set list in a previous post, but to summarize here's hoping for:

- one or two new songs
- a revitalized classic like "Precious and Grace" or "Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings"
- for the blues number maybe "Stockings" or "Just Got Back From Baby's"

While I will not be attending the opening night it is planned for the show to be recorded by a dedicated fan. I should be able to get a copy of the recording early next week and will publish a full review of the show on the blog.

-----

ZZ fans, make sure to check this page Friday 05/25 as our correspondent in the field Senor Volto will be providing live updates of the set list as it happens. I will open a new blog entry around 7:30 pm (EST) and will update with set list info and news through the evening.

-----

A second friend will be attending the May 27th show in Connecticut - I will again provide a set list and we can see if the show will possibly have any variation from night to night. Very unusual for ZZ to do this but you never know.

-----

I will be attending the June 5th show in Richmond, VA and will provide a full review of the proceedings in a future blog entry. Any readers going to this show?

Stay tuned.....

More "news" and rumors about the new album

Courtesy of Clay G. here is a link to an interesting article. Appears ZZ was hesitant to return to Houston early this summer with nothing to show for it. Now ZZ's publicist states either the new album, or a big gig in Houston to celebrate it, will take place in the early fall.

Clay G. "76 Shows and Counting"

Today we have a post from Clay G.,  a long time ZZ fan who has seen the band over 75 times. Number 77 will occur later this month when he catches the Outlawz tour. Clay has been most kind in providing some insight on his memories. If you like what you read then I urge you to comment - Clay might return the favor by sharing more memories.

-

ZZ memories – here’s a couple for you.
First show – 1977 March Boston Garden. Worldwide Texas tour. I was a freshman in college sitting around the dorm on the afternoon of the show. The boys show up at the local Rock Radio Station and do a quick interview, give out some real Texas bbq sauce and play some tunes from their new album – Tejas. Never really heard of them but all sounds very intriguing and they say there are tickets remaining. So, why not, we take metro into Boston and go up to the box office. Well the tickets they had were behind the stage but we went for them anyway. We get in the arena and Santana is the opening band. They are sounding good so we wander over to some choice seats in the front. Plan is to stay there until someone kicks us out. As fate would have it nobody showed up during Santana and ZZ is about to hit the stage – still no one. To this day I consider it an act of faith. The WWTT is well documented but for a Northern boy the impact of seeing two huge Texas steers rising up on either side of the stage, the smell of the farm you can just imagine. I couldn’t believe they would go to such extreme measures for the show to big these animals around the country for a 30 second appearance at the start of the show. Needless to say I was hooked.
Favorite opening – Afterburner. The big reveal with the Sphinx snorting up the drum cover and Billy and Dusty up on the risers with Frank. Each step they took down together to the main stage the crowd noise just keeps audibly rising until they were on stage. Seeing Dusty peer around the corner to find Billy is just priceless.
Favorite song – performance category – Hands down – Sleeping Bag. The two step they did at the first solo blows me away every time.
Favorite song in concert – tube snake boogie – old style when Billy and Dusty played around with Frank on the intro with the shakers suspended from the ceiling before hitting the guitar parts.
Recent Memory – taking my 2 early teen nephews to the Beacon Theater in NY for their first rock concert and watching them watch the show in amazement.
Best shows nobody saw – The Antenna tour. The album has always been underrated and it was kind of sad to see ½ full stadiums. Last of the really big shows.
Best seats – front row at the Oakdale in CT. Got the tickets thru the old fan club and was front and center with my wife ( who btw loves Dusty and is now a veteran of 15 or more shows). My wife is an art teacher so she makes a sign for the show which we reveal during Tush. The sign says “Billy, may I please have a pic?”. Well Dusty sees it first and motions to Billy. He comes over and drops the pick he was using into my hands and finishes the song with just his thumb. WOW!! – Today pick resides in a frame with the ticket stubs and a signed picture I got from Billy during his book tour on the wall in my study.

ZZ Top / Jeremiah Weed ad is up!

Here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHrS_BonASA

Random thoughts:

- Song sounds very similar to tracks from "Mescalero"
- I like the harmonizer on Dusty's voice (though many people may not)
- Cool that ZZ got a strong billing in this presentation of the ad
- I find "25 Lighters" to be a stronger track than "Flyin High" (which was all Billy in my opinion)
- Finding myself very excited to hear the new album
- August, August, August....

Dusty (in the field)

Today's entry is courtesy of blog contributor and good friend Senor Volto:

---

So Dusty has just joined Facebook!  You can find his page at:

http://www.facebook.com/dustyhillzztop

Good stuff!  Dusty seems to get right to the point when he tells a story (or now in his posts) and you don’t really have to read between the lines.  I really hope he keeps up the good posting.  The posts so far seem to be genuinely from him, and I think he will be fun to follow.  Also, there are pictures of the Dust from 2006 without the shades on.

But the best news is his post last Wednesday that said he was "On my way to rehearsal for the big summer tour". To me this implies a new show for this year, or at least some new songs or other elements, because they certainly dont' have to rehearse the 2010-2011 set again after playing it almost a hundred times.

Wonder if Frank joins Facebook....

---

Addendum:

I (editor ZZ blues) will add that the band's often used videographer has recently traveled to Houston to shoot some new footage and publicity photos for the upcoming tour and (hopefully) new album. Looks like the band is doing it right.

"25 Lighters" - available May 8th??

Some fans may have noticed that search results for "25 Lighters" turned up an older rap song. It would appear that ZZ has indeed covered the song, giving it a rap-rock sound.

Article here:

http://www.thehollywoodnews.com/2012/04/11/battleship-press-conference-qa-with-rihanna-peter-berg-taylor-kitsch-brooklyn-decker/

It would seem that the soundtrack for the movie "Battleship" may feature the song. According to Amazon pre-orders are being accepted now for the soundtrack release date of 2012-05-08. I am checking online for any info, clips, etc. Nothing found so far. Please let me know if you find anything.
Thanks
