Initial Thoughts on "La Futura"

-Heartache in Blue - fantastic, simply awesome. Love the riff, love the harp, love the sound, love Dusty's contribution. Hell yes.

- I Don't Wanna Lose Lose You - pretty good, somewhat linear but so is the entire album.

- Flyin High - prefer the original version, this one is trying too hard to be unadventerous and lacks Billy's flare and touch. A rare miss.

- It's Too Easy Manana - already perhaps within the top five of my favorite Billy solos of all time. Love the mood

- Big Shiny Nine - again rather straightforward - which is not a bad thing when its ZZ, but again a conservative approach

- Have a Little Mercy - great laidback melody and southern blues with just a hint of country. Great vocals.
It would appear that the meaning of "going back to their roots" entails removing Billy's eccentric and experimental studio approach to songs. Billy would take a basic track and throw in all kinds of sounds and beats, starting with the Antenna album and progressing to perhaps what may prove to be his artistic peak, the masterpiece that is Mescalero. I can see where the sounds on "La Futura" were laid down and instead of Billy leading the full helm and layering sounds during production, Rubin kept it simple and reinforced a hard rock sound.
It is perhaps no surprise that "I Gotsta Get Paid", arguably the best song of the ten, is a tune which Rubin had never heard of before, Billy fully conceived, and features the most diverse and experimental sounds of the entire album. Maybe the producer mix should have been 70% Billy , 30% Rubin?
Notwithstanding the above, overall I find this to be a fantastic and most exciting new album from the Top. No doubt it will fit the mold of and interest the average rock fan, both old and young, and should prove to sell very well.
Finally it has arrived, and finally fans the world over can tune in and rejoice in the continuing evolution of the world's longest running band, the world's greatest band, the ZZ Tops.

Blues You Can Use!

Ladies and Gentleman, the ever clairvoyant Senor Volto!:

Billy is on the cover of the new (October 2012) issue of Guitar World with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. They’re called “Blues Brothers”.  This was unexpected as he was featured in the January 2012 issue as Santa Claus (Wreck the Halls).  There are lots of pix of Billy and Dan showing off several unique guitars.  My favorite is Billy’s Dixie Beer single pickup Gibson on the cover.

There’s lots of namedropping about blues greats (Hound Dog Taylor!).  Billy and Dan share a lot of common ground – I won’t spoil the article here.  Dan and Billy do disagree about the awesomeness of British Blues players (Billy for, Dan against).  There’s also a nice sidebar about Billy and Dan’s love for Lightning Hopkins.

And, the issue has an excerpt from Buddy Guy’s upcoming autobiography “When I Left Home” about his introduction to Chicago Blues.  The excerpt shows how Buddy met greats Otis Rush and “The Mud”, Muddy Waters.  Can’t wait to read that book!

A full guitar tabs with playing hints for Top’s Waitin’ for The Bus and Buddy Guy’s Damn Right I’ve Got the Blues are included.

Get this issue, you won’t be sorry!

Crystal Ball

Look for ZZ to perform on the David Letterman Show sometime around mid September.

-----

Look for an article of unknown length, on the band and "La Futura", to premiere in Rolling Stone, either print or online, in the next few weeks.

Through the Forests and the Pines...

ZZ returned to playing U.S. soil last night, playing in California.

Anybody happen to catch the setlist? I haven't seen it anywhere yet...

-----

Nothing new on the "La Futura" front, other than the fact that I'm sure I'm not the only one counting down the days. 27 to go.

-----

ZZ has set a new show for October in San Antonio, but it appears to be with the "Gang of Outlawz". I hope they add Dallas and Houston and do some solo shows without the other two bands.

Sans ZZ: "Electronic Tonic"

I have not commented much on Billy's quietly touted solo project "Electronic Tonic" (which is a working title I assume). He indicated it was out there...and he's right.

I have heard a sampling of a song that, while it may not make the album, is likely an indication of where Billy is heading. It is an electronic tour de force, with moderately auto tuned vocals, beatbox synthesizer drums, keyboards, and other electronica touches. It is indeed different, but the little bit I have heard sounds awesome! Billy is unique, among a select few that artistically continue to change, rearrange, innovate and create, even after being in the game for 45+ years. This album may not win over all ZZ fans, but it's not meant to. It is what Billy wants to do, and I am guessing that he will gain some new followers based on this new direction.

Let's hope after the imminent success of "La Futura" and supporting tour that Billy hunkers down and puts his full effort and imagination into this very exciting project.

If you have an open mind, you will like what you hear...

Another positive review

"La Futura" update 1.1

News from the States:

http://www.cnbc.com/id/48464047

Only unfortunate thing appears to be the band's decision to limit the LP to 10 tracks. "Future Blues", "I Wish I Was Born a Mexican", among others, do not appear to have made the cut.

Billy's solo venture also appears to be very exciting.
