2016 Wrap Up
Well year number 47 for ZZ Top is in the books. And it was a year of highs and lows. Let's discuss how it all went down.
First the lows:
*** Dusty falling and injuring himself again -
Honestly after further thought I don't believe there is a systemic issue per se, and from watching and listening to Dusty his health doesn't appear to be markedly declining. He has suffered two decent injuries in as many years which is never a good sign. I will briefly mention that he likely could benefit from a little weight loss but couldn't we all. Hopefully he stays positive and makes a note from all this to take good care of himself everyday.
*** Late September live performances
A period of four weeks or so from mid September through mid October or so proved to be a low point for the band in my opinion. A lot of dialing it in, short shows, skipping songs, etc. If the band members aren't really into a particular venue or locale then don't play there every year. There were a few instances where they had five days of shows in a row. Fatigue and disillusionment are bound to set in. How about spreading the concerts out more and playing longer shows? The co-headline with Gov't Mule also proved to be under utilized - what could have proved exciting turned out rather dull and mundane.
*** Lack of initiative, drive, creativity
I truly believe the boys love playing live together or else they wouldn't do it so much. But taking a step back to try something new whether it be playing some long forgotten deep cuts, or working on a few new songs, or bringing back a little creativity to the stage set up would go a long way. I'm disappointed that they are starting up touring again in February 2017 - I had hoped they would get in a little studio time to flesh out some ideas and frameworks that Billy has hinted at in the recent past.
Now the highs:
*** Synergy
When the group was on and engaged their playing was as good as ever. There is no better proof of this than a performance in Washington D.C. at the 9:30 club at the end of this past August. A packed small club venue was just what they needed to get the spark and remember the fun that can be had. A hot set was run for a longer than normal duration. This is a theme that has repeated itself, akin to Hamburg in 1991 or Barndance in Houston in 1996. They need to pursue gigs that they're interested in playing, not spending 200 days a year in a bus going from one town to the next.
......That's the only real high of the year in my opinion, but then again I'm rather objective so.....

Ramblin' Man
Well it continues to be an inconsistent year for a historically consistent band. After canceling a bunch of dates in the spring due to Dusty's shoulder the group is now apparently canceling some late summer and early fall dates due to Gregg Allman's poor health. It's likely that some new dates will be added to fill in the gaps - at least that's what ZZ usually does.

Speaking of this latest forced layoff, how about Gibbons, Sardy and Hardy getting to work on mixing some of those leftover Futura tracks? And Billy indicated the band was working on new material as well, one song in particular for a motorcycle documentary due out either later this year or next year. I suppose we can look forward to at least one new song from the group between now and 2018 right?

The short European tour trek was an interesting affair. Thanks to a few of my good trading friends I managed to secure four recordings of the 2016 Euro dates. The "extended" show as ZZ puts it clocks in at around 75 minutes. Of course ZZ has always played short shows - I have a 1983 recording where the entire gig was 68 minutes. However, as a scrutinous fan was able to observe, that 1983 show only cost about 10 Euros (yes I know Euros didn't exist then, I'm comparing things here). The 2016 gig was eight times as much. And peers the same age as ZZ still play decently long gigs. Take that how you will.

Notwithstanding the short duration I will say the Euro shows were impressive and rather enjoyable. The return of Rough Boy is welcome and Billy's soloing is as beautiful and softly melodic as always. Chartreuse and its heavily distorted metal outro has become a favorite, and Dusty continues to shine brightly on Catfish Blues. The group appears to still have that telepathic sense that has always served to produce a tight and funky grove. Good news indeed.

Perhaps I sound like a broken record but shit I'm sick of Cheap Sunglasses. Almost 50 years of playing together and a huge catalogue to choose from - just play something else besides Sunglasses. You know Francine is a good tune right? Bang Bang is funky. Ten Foot Pole would draw some cheers (Billy played it on his recent solo tour). I mean come 'on, you gotta be sick of Sunglasses by now...

Something to Prove
Well after a forced hiatus to allow for Dusty's convalescing the band returns to the stage on June 23 in Birmingham England. No doubt favorable winds will be at their back as the band has always had a faithful and steady following in the UK and greater Europe. But does this show have more importance to it than the thousands that have come before?
ZZ has nothing to prove to anyone nor do they owe anyone anything. 47 years of playing and singing - they've done their part and more. But will they be trying to prove something to each other?
Do they still have it? Can they still operate as a full time band year after year? This is the second major injury for Dusty in a three year span. He's always been a little on the heavy side and smoked for decades. Time catches up to everyone, the members of the Top are no exception.
Maybe they come out with a better set list then what debuted earlier this year? Maybe they play a new song? Maybe they revert to that old fast sizzle and speed of younger days for a few tunes?
Many of the band's followers, those that have been there since the beginning, will of course smile and subconsciously overlook any signs of age or deterioration, whether in appearance, tenacity or skill. After all, they're all in this together. Younger fans like myself will admire and fully respect the years of toil and hard work they've dedicated to their labor of love, but consciously will recognize that finally, likely, their best years are behind them.
No one can do this forever. Better to have one list subtle reinvention and spark to go out on a high note. Let's see what type of future destiny Messrs.' Gibbons, Hill and Beard have elected for themselves.

The Story So Far; Dusty injured
Well up until yesterday things were going pretty smooth. The tour was receiving good reviews and happy fans when Dusty apparently fell backstage yesterday evening and dislocated his shoulder. This is the second major injury for Dusty in the past two years. I don't think it means anything aside from bad luck - he's looked well up on the stage so I don't see any systemic issues afoot.
Anyways the tour has been indefinitely postponed and this type of injury can take four to six weeks to heal. One potential positive outcome is Billy and the guys head back into the studio due to the downtime and finish working on some tracks, maybe even get enough together for a new album (combined with some leftover La Futura cuts).
Lastly I haven't seen any live recordings pop up from this year. If anyone has taped a show or has a source on one please let me know.

2016 tour
Well the tour is in full swing. Many updates can be found over on ZZ's Facebook fan page (the unofficial one) however be mindful that the posts are often through rose colored glasses. Criticism of the band is not allowed so it's mostly "the greatest" and "amazing show" and all that stuff.
Here at Antenna Head News I've never really minced words and I plan to continue being candid. Case in point the new set list isn't really what I would call new. They added "Beer Drinkers" as the new opener, took away "Sixteen Tons" and also removed the BarBQue and Sloppy Drunk from "La Grange" (as least at some of the gigs). Its basically the same set list since 2014.
But I can't complain too much. The set list changes in 2012 and 2013 were amazing, so we can always hold out hope that some new and rare stuff will creep its way in.
As always I love to hear comments from others so share what's on your mind. As long as it pertains to ZZ I don't censor...

Appears ZZ has been working on a few new tracks, one of which could appear in the upcoming film "American Dresser". The below article also indicates the new tracks will be played on the upcoming tour to begin this month. Quite a surprise if that comes to fruition.

Rest in Peace Frank Braun
Very sad to hear of the recent passing of Frank Braun. He was a well known ZZ Top fan in Europe who had a special relationship with the band and especially Billy. Frank has been invited on stage at shows before and the group always made a point to spend time with him when they were touring.
I had a few exchanges of correspondence with Frank in the past and he was always very kind and fun to speak with. He spoke highly of this blog which meant a lot to me. He also gave me the inside scoop about the impending release date news of "La Futura" about a week before it was officially announced which I felt truly reflected his passion both for the band and for fans who loved ZZ almost as much as he did.
Below is a very nice memorial composed by P. Anthony. I wish Frank all the best in his next life.

ZZ Top and Jeff Beck
Finally, a co-tour with ZZ that I can support. Great news to see these guys doing a tour together, and both playing full sets and apparently joining together to jam a little at the end. Should be fantastic stuff.
My friend in the Northeast has already committed to a show in Massachusetts and I'm debating about trying to see a few shows as well. So far the 2014 shows have been relatively low key without too many set list surprises (although "Catfish Blues" is a nice addition). Maybe Jeff Beck, who Billy admires particularly, will inspire the band to freshen it up a little for the co-tour.
I have yet to see any live recordings from this year aside from the Youtube clips and all that. If anybody has a complete recording of a show from this year please let me know.
ZZ will hit Europe soon where they continue to have an amazing following. I wonder how well "La Futura" sold across the pond....
Now that I think about it "Drive By Lover" would be a cool song to hear live...

Old and New

"And the Wheel Rolls On" for ZZ per Mr. Plant's prophetic words. Coming to a place near you, the ZZ Tops are again hitting the road hard. If the past few years have been an indication of what lies ahead than a continually updated set list is indeed something to look forward to.
I only managed to catch ZZ one time last year, a show near Richmond in May. I failed to blog at the time that I got to speak to Elwood for about 10 minutes or so prior to show time. When I commented how great the current set list was, he replied "its all Frank. He said they had to play some different numbers". So thanks goes to Rube and lets hope he's still voicing his opinion.
Hopefully I'll be able to catch them 2 or 3 times this year, we'll see what the clock allows...

Letter to a Friend

Great to hear from you. Happy New Years as well. Yes 2013 proved to be very busy and 2014 looks to be more of the same. Thanks for the kind words regarding the web site - I miss sharing my thoughts and keeping fully up to speed on all things ZZ.
The full Rodeo lineup is set to be announced in a few days so I'm hoping they will play it this year. If so I'll make the trek to Houston. Outside of that I haven't kept up too much on announced tour dates. I did see them last spring and will make sure to see them this year if they come round.
It would be nice to hear La Futura part two but someone's gotta get off their duff to make it happen. Rubin is too busy spreading himself too thin working with everyone under the sun and I don't believe Billy and Rubin parted the best of ways. Seems Billy got frustrated at Rubin for the delays but then Billy's got no excuse - he never forces himself into the studio and hunkers down either.
I do believe Billy when he cites tons of solo recordings but its all just bits and pieces in varying states of completion. He gets off on floating from project to project, city to city and is unwilling to put in the time and effort it takes to make an album anymore. Just look at all the side projects he has picked up recently - playing with the Moving Sidewalks, playing a solo gig, recording on all these albums of other artists - I think he's afraid he'll rot if he doesn't keep moving. Almost like Mick Jagger. Remember in his earlier 30's he just floated around in Europe and Africa for three years doing nothing - I think he'd go crazy if he tried that now.
Personally I don't see how Dusty and Frank have the will to keep going. There is a lot of love there but no break since 2006 is crazy. Frank in particular looks pretty rough - he has put on weight and chain smokes continually. He quit smoking in the 80's but has picked it back up hard. I don't like to think about this aspect but its very real that any day people like Jimmy Page, Charlie Watts, Frank, etc. could meet their maker.
Jagger summed it up well - when asked how he felt about getting old he replied "it beats the alternative". What else is there to do but rock right?
I think Futura will very likely be the last release from ZZ while they are active. There could be another release down the road after they fold for whatever reason but its really all up to Billy and he's busy chasing the tumbleweeds.

Churnin' and Burnin'
Well, let it be said that 2013 was not the most active year for the Antenna Head blog. I'm still here, and I hope the readers are still out there. I apologize for the lack of updates, posts and such. The family has grown this year and with that responsibilities have grown as well. I have met many friends through ZZ Top, the blog and trading and just want to remind everyone what a great time I have had getting to know you.
2013 has proven to be a great year for ZZ. Highlights include the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee which featured an incredible set list and the longest show they have played in years, and many excellent festival performances in Europe (one show even included the elusive double encore). If you didn't catch ZZ in the spring (or found the sound sucked (you know who you are)) then definitely see them when they return to the States. They've got gigs all the way into November so catch the fever. You never know, maybe next year will finally be a year off for the band.
My intentions are to continue enjoying spending time with the little ones, with the hope of the blog coming back to the fore late in the year or early 2014. If anyone wants to chat just email or call...

ZZ Top bringing it back / Review of Memphis show
While I will be attempting to write a more comprehensive review of the Crewe, VA show I attended this past Friday evening, let it be said that it was the most refreshing concert I've seen from the band in a long time. Four songs from Futura (they only ever played two from Mescalero!) as well as the classics "Precious and Grace" and "Nasty Dogs", combined with the debut of Certified Blues (which was awesome by the way and featured some great guitar work from Billy) makes this THE year to see the Top. If you have been putting it off because of money or the set list, now is the time to try to make it happen.
They played the full 20 song set. Interesting Billy spoke very little, with none of the bullshit stories that were recycled with such regularity. Almost like the old days, when the band came to play rather than entertain. Fantastic!

Straight from THE MAN in Alabama, Mr. Roadie himself:
We got to Memphis last night around 6 and it had been raining for days. The Beale St Festival is actually at Tom Lee Park on the banks of the Miss River. It was Woodstock part 2. Dreadfully muddy and wet. My boots were in ankle deep in mud everywhere I stepped. There were a lot of bands that drew the younger crowd(Black Keys, Government Mule and Rap). ZZ Top was scheduled to hit the stage at 10:45 so we went over and caught the Dwight Yoakam show which was very good. Dwight finished up so he could get over to see ZZ Top. They are all very good friends.
We snaked our way through the crowd and up to the front row shortly before Government Mule hit the stage. Their set didn't run over time allotment but due to the sloppy weather it took a long time to clear the stage after their set and ZZ didn't begin until shortly after 11. As I told you earlier, the set list almost mirrored (the) recent blog (entry) with the exception of Blue Jean Blues substituted for Fool For Your Stockings. I have noticed over the last few years that each tour holds less and less "Stuff" on stage. Gone are the usual props such as Expandora Dog, the animal skin on the floor and many other noticeable items. I understand that they can't use full props at a music festival, but last night in Memphis was naked on stage. There were no tumbling dice, no fake speakers, and no large light brite behind Frank. There was simply a 7ft X 7ft. light brite on either side of Dusty and Billy with 2 small amps stacked on top of each other that added nothing but decor. Their chrome microphones didn't even light up at all. It was bare naked but they made up for it with a heck of a show.
The new set list is great for us that know more about the band than the Eliminator hits, but I could hear a lot of "What is that song?" "Never heard these songs" in the crowd. The opening is still a modified version of The Girl". She now says "Please welcome for your rocking pleasure, that little ole band from Texas, ZZ TOP!" instead of ZZ TOPS which I have noticed. Immediately your hear just a drum hit by Frank then silence for a second, then another hit, then silence, then the lights come on and Billy and Dusty walk out to "Precious and Grace". I LOVED the addition of "Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings". They have new deep purple axes that you can see on the latest Dunlop rig rundown that was recently posted on Youtube.
Since they recorded so much music at Ardent studio in Memphis, they really love playing there and Billy called Memphis their second home last night. He said they had a place on Union Avenue for 18 years and they loved this town. Of all the new tracks played last night, "Gotsta Get Paid" was the best in my opinion. They really have a comfort level with this song now and it shows.
They played the full 20 song set. Interesting Billy spoke very little, with none of the bullshit stories that were recycled with such regularity. Almost like the old days, when the band came to play rather than entertain. Fantastic!

We got to Memphis last night around 6 and it had been raining for days. The Beale St Festival is actually at Tom Lee Park on the banks of the Miss River. It was Woodstock part 2. Dreadfully muddy and wet. My boots were in ankle deep in mud everywhere I stepped. There were a lot of bands that drew the younger crowd(Black Keys, Government Mule and Rap). ZZ Top was scheduled to hit the stage at 10:45 so we went over and caught the Dwight Yoakam show which was very good. Dwight finished up so he could get over to see ZZ Top. They are all very good friends.
We snaked our way through the crowd and up to the front row shortly before Government Mule hit the stage. Their set didn't run over time allotment but due to the sloppy weather it took a long time to clear the stage after their set and ZZ didn't begin until shortly after 11. Robins in Flight / Welcome to 2013
Well, spring has arrived, and with it the ever churning ZZ engines are firing up. Two shows down, many to go. With that, there are some apparently big set list surprises this year. Spoilers below:

These are the initial set list reports, which mind you can be terribly inaccurate. If this is indeed the case however it is very exciting indeed! My only hope is that some of these early shows are recorded before any of the special tunes are dropped, or alternatively that the special tunes are not dropped!
"Certified Blues" is especially interesting. My initial theory would be that as the band looked back at the old albums for the upcoming new box set (by the way, all the original albums are being released with the original vinyl mixes on an upcoming box set to be released this year) that they came across this old chestnut and decided to give it a wurl. "Precious", "Heartache", "Stockings", and "Nasty Dogs" are all extremely exciting as well!
I will be seeing the band one week from today and will write up a full report.
Between the new box set and new live tunes, combined with a possible La Futura II, this could shape up to be a fantastic year!

The State of Things....
Well, ZZ finished up the Australian leg last month. It went well, but ZZ was the middle act, playing before Guns N' Roses. Unfortunate that more often than not they are the opening band vs. the headliner these days.

The set list was unremarkable. They did play a full set show on 2013/03/15 in which they brought back Pincushion and Vincent Price Blues.
The highlight of the shows have been an even more expanded La Grange medley, with new variations and jamming from Billy.
The lowlights are the continued lack of support for La Futura, with only Gotsta and Chartreuse (and sometimes just Gotsta) being played. The group is lazy when it comes to challenging themselves to learn new songs. A significant lowlight is the fact the very vast majority of Dusty's vocals are lip-synched, including Tush. His voice seems to have left him more or less for good. It might be time for ZZ to pack it in...

The Sidewalks show was well received, and its nice to hear Billy playing something besides Jesus Just Left Chicago. Interesting that he is willing to challenge himself with different bandmates, but very little changes with ZZ. Let's hope Billy focuses his efforts on his solo work and possibly more Sidewalks events.
ZZ is slowly fading over the West Texas horizon......so like a sunset, watch it while its still here...

Well here comes Lola....
Right then. Spring time is beginning here in the Northern Hemisphere, and Autumn is starting in the Southern. Better gets those Australian gigs underway....
ZZ, with another album under their belt, returns to the stage beginning March 9th. Few details have leaked out in the form of pictures and preparations info regarding the set list, so its anyone's guess. Squally contributed a great proposal - Driving While Blind, She's Just Killing Me and especially Mescalero (anything from the album would be wonderful) would be fantastic additions. Over You and Lose, Lose You would be very nice selections from La Futura as well. Let's hope they have approached rehearsals with the same open mindedness they had last year.
I anticipate having a recording of the Melbourne show. If they play anything unusual I'm gonna try to figure out how to post a sound clip here on the site - it'd be cool for everyone to be able to hear the music.
I predicted Billy would focus on his solo album in 2013 and 2014, well it looks like it ain't gonna be this year. No idea what he did over the winter, maybe he recorded, maybe he traveled? Things were pretty quiet.
I encourage those on facebook to friend Mr. Hill. Last year he and Mrs. Dust frequently posted live shots as well as backstage photos as the tour progressed. Pretty cool stuff and gives an insider's look at what the band does in their free time. Word on the street says they like to play with remote control airplanes, at least in the old days...
I'll try to shed some light on the Moving Sidewalks gigs (2 for now) as well and post details like set lists, sound clips, etc. 2012 was indeed a very exciting year, but it looks like 2013 will be full of surprises too.
