Would anybody else besides me be incredibly interested in the band releasing the entire recording of the 1974-04-12 New Orleans Warehouse recording, which can be heard in part on the first side of Fandango? I mean really, 1974 ZZ was some heavy stuff, and if the entire show features the clarity, energy and ambiance that is partially revealed on Fandango, then it would surely be a huge release. We have seen the official release of Rockpalast so why not?

Each year I do the same thing - predict an overly hopeful set list and then complain when nothing close to it materializes. Not this year. The band can obviously play what they want. The only good bet on hearing anything unique is the Rodeo, which is why I drove 22 hours each way to Houston back in March.
Here is my "realistic" take on the set list, at least for the "Outlaws" tour:
- One or two songs from the new album, likely to include "25 Lighters"
- The retirement of "I Need You Tonight"; hope to hear "Fool For Your Stockings" again
- Return of "Heard It On the X"
- Inclusion of "Grace", "Chevrolet", or "She Loves My Automobile" as the rare song insert
I hope this is as "realistic" as I think it is....

August Release Date for New Album? / It's the Final Countdown

Rock N Roll Hall of Fame
I'm sure most fans are aware of this however always good to mention, Billy and Dusty gave the induction speech for bluesman Freddie King last night at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies in Cleveland, OH.
Billy and Dusty were also set to play onstage with several other musicians.
Unfortunately the event cannot be viewed in its entirety until May 5th when it will be featured as a special on HBO, a pay channel in the states. I will spare readers my diatribe against the Hall for bogarting the footage for money, but let's just say I am not a fan of the pay per view approach.
No matter, the public, when met with a demand, will always provide the supply, and in 2012 the supply is often free. But that's another issue altogether.

Family Time / Crickets Chirping
Due to some temporary events in my personal life my available free time is pretty much zero. Accordingly it will be harder for me to update the blog with news and the occasional opinions and asides. To be sure I will try to post if I get the inside scoop regarding some exciting news or developments. I encourage readers to post comments if they hear or see anything as well.
Ultimately things should calm down in about six to eight weeks. Just in time for the tour!

Whiskey commercial; new song debut in set list likely
The grapevine describes the upcoming Jeremiah Weed commercial:
Unsuspecting and surprised consumers walk into the cooler section of a convenience store to find ZZ Top playing a song from their new album ("25 Lighters").
The commercial should be debuting very soon. Keep on the look out.

Tour Announced; "25 Lighters"; Thoughts
As you have problem seen ZZ announced the first leg of the "Gang of Outlaws" tour that begins May 25 in New Hampshire. Apparently the official press release hints that a few songs from the new album will make it into the set list. They better not be talking about "Future Blues" (which is on the new album) - it has been played for years. I truly hope some new ones make an appearance - ZZ needs to aggressively promote the new record. No better way than to do it on the road.

I'm going to go out on a limb and saw that I'm 95% confident the new album will finally arrive this year. Billy has stuck his neck out too far in recent weeks. If the album didn't come out the band would suffer a big blow to their credibility, and the ensuing frustration could turn off fans on ever buying the record, for good this time.

Odds and Ends; Questions and Theories (...how many more years?)
Jeremiah Weed is about to debut a new marketing campaign for their whiskey product. The advertisements will feature a song from ZZ's new album, "25 Lighters". It is unknown at this time what different mediums will be involved: TV, internet, radio, etc. A link with more details is here:

ZZ is set to announce a 30 date US trek. They will be touring alongside Three Doors Down; it is still unknown if Gretchen Wilson will be in for the long haul. The tour actually has a formal name, but I can't remember right now. I believe it is the "Outlaws" tour.

Billy has made several playing appearances since the Rodeo. Two or three dates in Austin as well as playing at Rachael Ray's annual bash that takes place during the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW).
Apparently Billy is good friends with Rachael and has been for years.

Billy has been promoting his soon to debut line of barbecue sauce, as well as a new brand of beer. I would first check his personal website for info - hopefully the prices aren't outrageous. I'll likely give them a try.

1st Question: Why do ZZ always tour with new bands these last few years?
Theory: Because they do not want to play full 80 minute sets anymore, demand is down, and they need an attractive incentive for people to keep seeing them year after year.
2nd Question: Why is ZZ's album still being delayed?
Theory: Rick Rubin holds the tapes. ZZ doesn't have proper management. ZZ is not that interested about new music anymore. *If the album is not released by July, do not look for it to be released this year at all - they will not release a new album without a full year of tour dates to promote it.
3rd Question: How long will ZZ still play and tour?
Theory: I would say three years is a good guess. Billy will stay in the public eye for as long as his health will allow, but Dusty and Frank are likely thinking of the day when they can disappear and enjoy a slower pace of life.
4th Question: How many more albums will ZZ release?
Theory: One. It has already been recorded. See question 2 above.

Rodeo Roundup
Houston, Texas. That place is a serious force to be reckoned with. Millions of people, millions of cars and thousands of miles of asphalt. Thanks to the unique lack of zoning laws Houston has been able to expand, grow and sprawl at an unclipped rate, the result of no need to cut through the red tape and await clearance, grants and approvals from various commissions. While this has resulted in sometimes unnecessary traffic congestion and questionable locations of various businesses and "clubs", it also has encouraged an extremely deep and diverse mixture of cultures, influences, music and entertainment. The city, like New York, does not appear to sleep.
Having never been to Houston or Texas for that matter some stereotypes were true, but most were false. There are an overabundance of trucks with only one occupant in the vehicle, where a car would seemingly make more sense. ome of the health habits of the population are cringe worthy. And it is humid, even in March. But the people, contrary to some opinions, appear to be very nice. Manners and chivalry are respected and encouraged, and our out of town plates did not seem to entice any unwelcomed behavior from Texans. Everyone seemed to get along and everyone appeared to be relaxed with low stress levels, remarkable considering the amount of pressure the city can put on you.
Perhaps a stereotype that was in full force was that Texans are proud. They love Houston, they love rodeos, they love Texas, and they love ZZ Top. 55,000+ people turned out to watch the Top's show, and the applause after each song was louder than any encore demand I have heard in any other city. Dusty only had to cock his head ever so slightly, as he did just prior to the Roulette introduce to "Viva", to be met with rapturous approval. This being the 8th time I have seen them play, I had never seen them shine brighter, be more relaxed, smile as much, or jam as hard as I saw them at the rodeo.
As briefly mentioned in my initial impressions Billy especially was animated, creative and spontaneous - more than I have ever seen or ever heard among the 100 or so shows I have on tape from year 2000 and on. He and the band obviously wanted to impress, please, stun, and reinforce their deservedly high place in Tejas culture.
As hoped and anticipated the group worked hard to pull off some rare numbers. In the past having recalled Johnny Cash and Hank Snow, this time Country and Western staples from Blind Blake and Johnny Paycheck were brought to the stage. With the subdued but perfectly supportive acoustic guitar of Jamey Johnson, along with his fitting lead vocals, combined with the twang of Elwood's steel guitar, the five piece unit maintained the individual contributions of each member (as the three piece Top does) yet combined to present a pleasingly smooth and authentic southern country sound. If you have ever wondered how ZZ would sound with another instrument in the mix this is evidence of how the sometimes thin live sound of the band would be fleshed out. At this point it would be blasphemy to add another musician on stage, but thirty years ago perhaps it could have been explored.
It does need to be said that the rodeo itself, featuring multiple varying competitions from bull riding to carriage races to mutton bustin, is likely to entertain anyone with an open mind. While I would not travel to Houston just to see a rodeo by itself, there is no doubt that many people do, as the sport is very popular and faithfully followed by many in the Southwest and Midwest regions of the US. And if I do ever go to another ZZ Houston show I will look forward to the rodeo as a vital part and highlight of the trip.
Also very enjoyable, yet unfortunately all too unusual, was the abundance of fans who have an educated knowledge of the band. Unlike seeing performances in rural Pennsylvania or beach towns in Virginia, where spectators yell out "Cheap Sunglasses" ever two minutes, Houstonians appreciated every minute of the rodeo performance, and no stupid comments or requests were picked up by my years. Also the diverse range of age groups and mix of T-shirt and hat memorabilia showed that these individuals had followed the band through every curve and studder step their music had taken - not having listened only to Eliminator and Afterburner, but to Rio Grande Mud, El Loco and XXX. How refreshing.
If you have not already please check YouTube for the multiple videos of each song, with varying audio and visual quality. The images reinforce the massiveness of the arena, capable of holding 80,000 plus spectators. Just like the saying goes everything is bigger in Texas and Reliant Stadium is on the larger end of American venues. The sound was surprisingly better than I expected, given the extremely challenging acoustics of such a performance hall.
I do have a few videos of the show however the quality is average and the clips are relatively short, due mostly to a failure to bring back up batteries for the HD camera. YouTube has the good stuff, thanks largely to the efforts and time commitments of fellow good hearted Top followers.
Having had the opportunity to see the show with both family and good friends was especially rewarding, and the memories of the trip will certainly be preserved in my mind for as long as I roam this circular venue. As some may have seen there have been some recent articles about the continued delay in the new album, now rumored to be appearing in June at the earliest, and these rumors will be addressed in future blog entries, along with theories on the reason for the delays and thoughts on the lack of any new songs being performed at the rodeo.
A new album would truly prove, for the long term, that the band is still an active and evolving force. But Thursday March 8th did prove, if only for one night, that ZZ was alive and well, and still that Little Ol' Band from Texas.

Well, another Houston Rodeo show is in the books. I will have a full report with photos and video in the coming days. As of now I am still in Texas and over 1200 miles from home, so the final write-up will come later. But here are some details:

Showtime at the Apollo - 02/24/2012
Billy played lead and sang vocals on "I Asked For Water" and "Mister Highway Man". His playing was fluid and confident and he appears to have enjoyed himself immensely, as he should. His vocals continue to age, fitting the played material perfectly - a raspy bluesy tone and gravel that sounds as much like the delta blues as Muddy Waters at the mike. Time to throw out those lip-synched vocals of "Legs" and get with the real mccoy, the real deal, the real sound....

What The...This Blog Doesn't Have Any Answers!
As Korken pointed out a few European summer tour dates have been announced, along with a show at a ribs (the food) festival outside of Chicago. Very quiet otherwise.
The delays in any announcements regarding the new album could have something to do with Rick Rubin having a major disagreement with his employer. The article can be found here:

I can't imagine that the album isn't mixed and ready for release by now Just put the damn thing out. ZZ fans shouldn't have to wait on the hesitancy, reluctance or laziness of any parties involved in the process. Shouldn't it just be about the music? We are ready. We've been ready. Let's do this.

Hopes and Dreams
So Aerosmith, a band that has faced more turmoil and problems and issues and delays and stupidity than any band I can think of in recent memory has faced, toured Latin American and Japan in the fall and early winter of last year. And they kicked ass. Varying the set list from night to night, breaking out old gems that haven't been heard in ages, jamming, playing tight but loose - the group reminded people of the glory days.
So ZZ Top, without the interference of egos, drugs or health problems, should be able to kick ass too right? Right? RIGHT?
With a new album supposedly coming out (okay, I'm starting to get a little worried, nothing has been said in several months, this thing is supposed to be out in March or April, an announcement needs to be made soon, a new single, a promo, some interviews, something) in the spring and no doubt an endless touring schedule to follow, of which several dates have started to leak, this is the perfect time for the band to mix it up. Sure, the 2009-2011 set list was great (sarcasm), but you can't play the same songs for years at a time. You're insulting people. You're insulting their wallets. You're insulting yourselves.
New album, new music, new live show. It all goes together. Play new songs off the new album. Play old songs like Drivin' While Blind and Movin' On Down the Line. Don't jerk me around. You've got fans that have followed you for 40 years. Do it for them. Do it for Texas. Do it for Zig Zags. Do it for Noreen. Do it for Precious. Do it for Grace. Do it for Blayney. Do it for Linden. Do it for Greig. Do it for Ethridge. Do it for Mitchell. Do it right. Now.

Slow Going....
Well, not much is happening right now. I have heard nothing recently about the new album. Hopefully something will be announced soon - maybe a press release, an album title, a new single, a release date - anything would be exciting (and reassuring) to hear.
I am continuing to make plans for Houston. Not much has been said by the band regarding the event but it should prove to be a great time. As I said before, in my opinion this is THE ZZ show to attend if you are a fan of the tres hombres.

Houston 2012!!!
Announced today, ZZ Top will be playing the Rodeo in Houston on March 8th, 2012. This is THE show to see if you are a ZZ Top fan.

The Ties That Bind....Part One
So, 41 years and counting. ZZ Top has been one continuous unit, functioning as a whole comprised of three individual and unique parts, since many of our readers were even born. What compels these three men to maintain a major commitment, of both time and interest, year after year?
Perhaps the formula is not so secret. I'm going to cite some factors that I think are contributing:
- Meeting each other and becoming friends at a young age. Billy, Dusty and Frank got to know each other in their late teens to very early 20's. At the tail end of their formative years, they developed a sense of trust and respect for each other, going on to experience, together, many of life's trials and troubles in the years to come.
- Having the same hunger and drive. All three wanted to play music, perform that music on their respective instruments, and be in a band with other talented individuals. Frank filled a hole that Billy had, and then Dusty was invited to file a hole that Billy and Frank had. They met at the right time, and each was able to satisfy the others' needs by meeting the expectations of talent, creativity, ambition, and ideas. A synergy was immediately formed.
- Having similar interests. They liked being on the road, they liked playing their type of music, and they liked spreading the sound of Texas; also they liked money and girls, but not at the expense of the former three. Experts say your musical tastes are formed in your teens, hence by the time the members met they knew what they liked - these tastes have never changed thus the appeal of the group has not suffered from lack of individual interest in the continued playing of music.
- A good manager. It cannot be stressed enough how important this is. Bill Ham is the FOURTH MEMBER of ZZ Top. He deserves a good deal of credit for harnessing the youth, unbridled enthusiasm, and energy of the three young men, traits that the young can often release in malevolent and determination ways. Bill Ham was older, more mature, business savvy, smart, instinctual, and honest; he was at the wheel for the better part of 35 years. ZZ Top is what it is today due in great part to their former manager.
- Staying away from drugs. Notwithstanding Frank's dependencies through the majority of the '70's, the group for the large part stayed away from heavy drugs, and never developed a detrimental addiction to alcohol. They didn't miss gigs, and they didn't cancel on commitments. Drugs have brought down so very many bands and musicians that the occasional event of another entertainer dying of unnatural causes never seems to surprise anymore.
The second edition will comment on what additional factors I consider to be involved:

- A sense of need.
- A sense of fame.
- A sense of fear.
- A sense of duty.
- A sense of obligation.
- A sense of place

Happy New Year - Welcome to '12 / December Cruise
Happy New Year to all! I've got a few New Year's resolutions, we'll see if I can keep them. Hope everyone had a great and safe holiday celebration.

3) If promotional activity actually takes place (remember the lack of attention for Mescalero?)

It is very exciting indeed that it appears the new album will finally be released. Billy often regurgitates the line "a mix of Tres Hombres and Eliminator" but I'm not really looking for the new record to sound like any of the old ones. ZZ is so great because they have always treaded new ground, being willing to attempt different sounds and structures, rather than be a formula band. Their studio work is an amazing contrast to the staleness and mundane nature of their live performances. Mescalero, the newest thing we have, featured a great assortment and variety of different songs, which jelled together to make it one of the group's top five (in my opinion). Maybe the new album will push it to the number 6 spot - I'm confident I'm not the only one ready to find out.

I read one account where a person stated they did two shows, which were great; one show however had to be cut short due to a power failure.
