ZZ Top Mashantucket, CT show review 05/27/2012

Courtesy of Clay G., here is his review of last night's show. Many thanks Clay for your wonderful contributions!

The Gang of Outlaws tour rolled into Connecticut on Sunday night May 27th for the third stop of the tour. The vibe was different this night perhaps due to talk of a new album coming soon, a brand new commercial airing for Jeremiah Weed and an opening night report of many deep cuts being rolled out. Are they finally breaking out of the oldies slump? Alas, they came close but ultimately left us wondering yet again. I'll skip Ms. Wilson and 3 Doors Down although they both did nice sets. Everything was running on time tonight. During intermission no playing of Flyin High with about 15 minutes between sets - enough time to check out the merchandise. How sad it is to see ZZ going back to the XXX cover for a tee shirt and just putting the 2012 tour dates on the back. $40? We miss you, Bill Narum. The Z cattle brand or the Pin Cushion voodoo doll would of made a great graphic.
The Foxwood MGM has a huge stage at the Casino, very deep and wide. 3 Doors Down placed the drummer toward the back. Even with 5 guys they seemed lost on the big stage. ZZ set Frank up about half way to the front on the small tear shaped riser with the same brown skull kit and gong which he never uses from previous tours. In front of the drums there is a black floor mat/ rug running almost the length of the stage . First time I have ever seen this. Same two iconic microphone stands as previous tours.
9:00 pm exactly -show time. I have never seen Billy and Dusty milk the opening walk to the microphones so slowly - slow motion. That set the pace for the night - I have never seen less movement from them. The sound was fantastic all night - they nailed it right away on I Thank You. Highlights for me were Mississippi and Vincent. Great to see Nationwide and Cheap off the set list. It would have been a great night except for some reason the boys left out Heaven, Hell or Houston, Sloppy Drunk and BBQ from the set list. Believe it or not they left the stage at 10:06 pm - 66 minutes in total. What a Shame!
A couple of unplanned items - after Jesus Billy says "wait a minute" and he goes off stage for 90 seconds. He comes back and says "I forgot my tuner - but who cares, it's Rock and Roll". A missed opportunity for a bass and or drum solo, instead Dusty and Frank just waited. After Tush during the bows a black dog Franks? ran out on the stage, Billy almost trips over him or her.
Guitars - they start out with the new Jeremiah Weed guitars. Billy goes to a Gibson Melody Maker ( comments that it was his first guitar - although I doubt it had the custom pin striping). Dusty goes to his new black bass. Billy played the encore with a Les Paul. It's funny how he has Bolin make the lightest guitars but yet wears so much junk around his neck.
In summary, looks like a lot of thought has gone into this tour. Same cast ( Elwood, Pedro etc) but all new video, from what we could see in the cheap seats blocked by the speakers . Wonder if something was wrong with one of them last night. This had makings of being spectacular - but 66 minutes, come on guys!
