An Assortment of Things

Well, there is not too much really going on. Billy has made a handful of playing appearances with other musicians as of late. He really does seem to venture out and apparently loves to socialize - I don't know if he ever spends time at his CA or TX homes.
---
Titles for six of the songs on the new album are now known:
1) "I Wish I Was Born a Mexican"
2) "Flyin High"
3) "Have a Little Mercy"
4) "More Slower Blues"
5) "Future Blues"
6) "Chartreuse"
---
Billy is on the cover of the latest issue of "Guitar World". There is a short article featuring an interview with Billy, focusing heavily on the upcoming new album. There are also some very interesting studio photos, showing Billy sitting and playing guitar, Dusty laying down some vocals, and Frank at the mixing desk. Hard to believe but we may see a new album in the next three or four months. Can't wait.

Sweet Sweet Memorabilia

Here is a link to some really cool rare ZZ items. Does the Antenna album cover really stem from a 1983 fan club poster?

Senor Volto edition: "Sad Passing"

Hubert Sumlin 1931 - 2011

Sadly, the blues world lost another great this week when Hubert Sumlin passed on at the age of 80. Born and raised in the South, Hubert moved to Chicago in 1953 to become a part of the great Chicago blues scene. Hubert was Howlin’ Wolf’s guitarist in the1950s and backed up him until Wolf’s death in 1976. He also backed up Muddy Waters for a short time in the 1950s. ZZ Top has often cited Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters as influences, so they no doubt crossed paths with this great musician. BFG pays respect to Hubert at http://www.examiner.com/local-music-in-new-york/hubert-sumlin-an-appreciation .

Hubert influenced guitarists around the world including Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Page. The home page of his website http://www.hubertsumlinblues.com has some sweet words from Toni Ann Mamary who became his caretaker after the death of his wife. There page http://www.hubertsumlinblues.com/biography.html also contains more information about the man.

The video lesson at http://www.guitarworld.com/video-hubert-sumlin-blues-guitar-lesson with Hubert from Guitar World will surely make you smile.

Hubert Sumlin was truly a blues great that will surely be missed.

Billy Gibbons video interview regarding new album (and possible delays)

Here is a link to a new interview with Billy. Talks at length about the new album, but hints at possible new delays....

I don't think the album needs to be perfect, the more raw the better. I hope this thing is not being over produced.

The lonesome trail... / Heard on the Street

Well, things are pretty quiet. I haven't really had much interesting to say recently as nothing interesting in the world of ZZ Top is really going on.

Two exciting points however. Word on the street is that:

- The new album is scheduled for March of 2012. This is almost a set in stone date.
- Appears more likely than not that ZZ will play the Rodeo in Houston in Spring '12

If you're a ZZ fan, and you want to see one of the consistently best shows that ZZ puts on, you gotta do the Rodeo thang. Could be the debut of some new songs and unique covers, just like in past Rodeo performances.

Be there or be square.

"Sajet"

Courtesy of part time blogger Senor Volto:

"Sajet"

Yup, that’s “Tejas” backwards. I fully agree with an earliest post about “Tejas” – it’s a great album featuring three musicians at the top of their game playing a diverse range of song styles. I went to give “Tejas” a listen recently and accidentally copied the songs in reverse order so the playlist started with “Asleep in the Desert” and ended with “It’s Only Love”. The reverse playlist makes listening to the album even more enjoyable. “Sajet” begins with a southwest/country flavor by starting with “Desert” followed with “She’s a Heartbreaker”. The reversed album is in full-tilt rock mode by the time “Ten Dollar Man” (complete with Dusty’s sneeze!) rolls around. Also, “Snappy Khaki” followed by “El Diablo” works very well. “Sejat” makes you wait until the very end for the payoff of the singles “Arrested for Driving While Blind” and “It’s Only Love”.

An abridged version of “Asleep in the Desert” would certainly work as opening music to a live ZZ show, and any song from “Sajet” would be right at home on next year’s tour.

This experiment might not work so well with some ZZ albums, but it’s certainly worth trying on others (Mud Grande Rio?). I’m sure the album shuffle possibilities are endless as well.

Delayed Tribute

I guess I never gave much notice or written space to the tribute album release. Partly due to frustration on new album delays and partly due to a loathing of tribute albums in general I just didn't think much about it. Thanks to a good friend I did get a copy and have given it a good listen several times now.

And...its pretty good. A very diverse mixture of artists have covered the group's hits and for the most part made them their own. Only La Grange, which Billy plays on, suffers from stagnation, simply building on the well known foundation of the song and expanding it into an eight minute jam. Wyclef John (who was very popular in my formative years) really does a number on "Rough Boy", and while his version may not suit everyone, it definitely deserves some credit for originality. And its true that even the original "Rough Boy" doesn't suit everyone's tastes, although I really dig it.

The hard rock versions of "Lovin" and "Legs" are pretty sweet too. All in all a fitting tribute to ZZ, the kings of changing the tunes from album to album but never the "sound".

If anyone has hesitated to buy the record to date you could do worse than picking the album up. I will put my official "AntennaHead stamp of approval" on it, but that is only worth as much as you give me credit for.

Rocky Hill

Rocky Hill, Dusty's brother, sadly passed away in 2009 at the young age of 62. It appears Rocky, who had significant talent, was hamstrung by personal problems that prevented him from being able to utilize his skills as a musician to greater effect. He remained an underground star, well known in the Houston and Dallas areas but relatively obscure outside of TX. He was the founding member of American Blues, from which two members would break off and later help to form ZZ Top.

Below is a link to an excellent article about the man and his recording career. It does contain quotes from Billy, the first discussion I have ever seen of Rocky from a member of the Top, but Dusty is silent. The group covered a Rocky song "I Walked from Dallas" during live shows in 1996, and upon close inspection the lyrics tell the tale of ZZ's rise to fame.

I had not picked up the album "Texas Guitar Legend" in the past but this article makes the correct argument that I have missed a gem. I will be seeking it out now.

Does anyone have some of his recorded works and would like to comment?

What to listen to this weekend?

Lately the blog has become more about upcoming events and attractions in the land of ZZ, and this aspect will surely ramp up as the release date for the new album approaches. Sometimes its good to stick to the original blog formula. With that in mind, in the interim between now and that no doubt fantastic new record we do have 14 albums of great ZZ music to choose from. What should we pick?

I really am pretty obvious when it comes to my two favorite records, those being "Rhythmeen" and "Tejas". They simply are phenomenal collections of intricate, authentic Southern blues and rock that ZZ emulates so well. Having been recorded in two different periods of the bands career, the collections have some things in common.

The 1976 classic showcases a group that could record any type of music it wanted to, at the slightest notice, and make it amazing. The band's ability to write songs during this period, lyrically and musically, is perhaps unmatched in the time that has transpired since. Markedly this is, in my opinion, the last album where the band took themselves seriously, where they are clawing to make a name for themselves and show they have what it takes. "Deguello" would begin to showcase a group becoming more interested in having fun and being "entertainers" vs. musicians. There were two roads to choose from, the continued pursuit of great music, or the pursuit of great times. I don't know if ZZ made the wrong choice, and the albums that have been put out since are certainly great in their own way - still I wonder what would have happened had the other route been selected. I could do without "Pearl Necklace" and "Tube Steak Boogie", but I suppose many could not.

Twenty years later ZZ Top once again were clawing out, this time to reestablish credibility and musicianship within the industry, both with critics and fans alike. And for a second time the band's ability to almost spontaneously record a monster of a musically and lyrically fluent album came to fruition. "Rhythmeen", from the very, very first guitar chord and bass note of the title track through to the final cymbal crash of "Isn't Love Amazing", simply amazes. Tragically the record was too late, but it was not too little. Those in the know, like you and me, have no doubt this record could stand up to the best not only of ZZ's catalogue, but the blues/rock genre as a whole. It's good to have these gems to crank.

To do list:
Saturday - "Tejas"
Sunday - "Rhythmeen"

Sirius - ZZ Top live / Tribute from Friends

Tonight at 10:30 EST ZZ's live performance from the first annual La Grange Fest will be broadcast live on Sirius XM. Pretty cool arrangement if you ask me. If time allows make sure to have a sit down, hook your computer up to your stereo speakers, pour a little Southern Comfort (to make a southern man feel comfortable) and enjoy the show. You'll save approx $60, can close your eyes and you're basically there.

For those who don't have Sirius (myself included) you can register for a free 7 day trial and enjoy the concert committment free. Details are on Sirius' website.

---

Thanks to a kind friend I received a copy of the tribute album. Have only had a chance to listen to about half the songs. Definitely a unique mix of styles and takes - check out Wyclef Jean's version of "Rough Boy". And it appears the "supergroup" M.O.B., which covers "Sharp Dressed Man" may go on to work on some new material in the future. If you've never heard Chickenfoot's LP make sure to check it out, pretty good stuff.

Guest Post - "A Proposed Model for the Next ZZ Top Tour"

Here is what's on Senor Volto's mind this week:

---

Wouldn’t it be nice if ZZ followed this example?

A friend of mine was discussing a concert he recently attended by the band Primus. Primus is a rock band whose music falls over several genres (alternative, funk, progressive, experimental). The tour is called the Green Naugahyde tour and supports the album of the same name which was released in September 2011. Green Naugahyde is the first Primus studio album in 11 years. The playlist on the current tour has two sets and an encore. The first set on this tour is a constantly changing playlist of the band’s older hits and fan favorites as well as other obscure tunes. The second set is the entire Green Naugahyde album – the album is 13 songs in 51 minutes. The encore is usually two songs – usually both songs are fan favorites, sometimes it’s one hit and one obscure nugget.

Primus was on fairly exhaustive tour schedule from July to December of 2010 (sound familiar?). After about a two month break, they resumed touring and premiered the first two songs from the yet unreleased album at the end of February. This group of shows lasted about a month. Primus resumed touring in May of this year and salted in six more new unreleased songs during May and early June. This leg of the tour went until early August. When Primus started playing live again on 23 September, it was for the Green Naugahyde tour. Again, the entire new album is played as the second set.

It would really cool if ZZ were to debut new a new song or two in concert before the release of the new album. However, the current tour is scheduled until the end of October, and the new album is scheduled for release in March – April 2012, so this probably won’t happen. Perhaps the band will appear (maybe on a TV show?) sometime in between to play a new song or two. It would be very surprising if they followed a plan like Primus – playing a varied list of older songs every night and playing the entire new album. Maybe the different playlist every night is too much to ask, but some unexpected surprises would be cool. Expecting ZZ to play the entire new album as a set is probably unreasonable, but they used to play lots of new songs on the tours supporting new albums up to and including Rhythmeen. Only four songs were played in support of XXX. Only two songs were played live from Mescalero, but that whole album would have been a long set at just over 61 minutes.

I haven’t dug deeper to see if this is how Primus always supports their new music. I do feel that while playing an entire new album as one set is probably very uncommon, we should certainly hope for more than two live tracks from the new ZZ album.

Where are the books?

I have occasionally given some thought to the lack of good books about ZZ Top, either the individual members or the band as a whole. Surely a group that has existed intact for almost 42 years is deserving of some dedication through the written word.

Really I have only found one book, "Sharp Dressed Men" to have a real interpersonal account of the band's beginning through to the ultimate rise to the stratosphere in the early '80's. Unfortunately the author, who was a roadie for the band, resigned after the Eliminator US tour, and, having seemingly provided many years of loyal service, was not encouraged to stay by Messrs Ham and Gibbons.

The only plausible option is to piece together the multitude of magazines from over the years and combine the interviews into a reasonable timeline of the band's position and outlook. This is my no means a cumbersome task, but can prove to be an expensive one. It would truly be nice to have a full exhausted account of the world's longest running trio.

And truly Billy is ripe for an autobiography. Look at the tales from Steven Tyler, Keith Richards and Sammy Hagar - true the subject matter has a favorable spin but it sure would be nice to hear Billy's thoughts besides the usual "same three guys, same three chords" spiel. And I would love just as much to hear Dusty's (I bet that guy has some interesting things to say) or Frank's account - I mean really, advertisement for Frank's book could be sponsored by Tab.

There are a handful of books that were written in the early to mid 1980's, but these were merely meant to capitalize on the group's fame at the moment and are little more than irrelevant fluff. Pity really.

If anyone knows of any good books out there that I am unaware of or that are rare in nature please advise in the comments section accordingly. Thanks!

A Tribute from Friends / Back to the Drawing Board

So the new official ZZ page has been really pushing the upcoming tribute album. I will be honest and say that I have never cared for these types of records, and found even the Zeppelin tribute album "Encomium" to be pretty boring. Its just never as good as the real thing. Maybe this release will be different you never know. And I suppose it is a good thing to pass the time until the new album comes out.

Aside from the tribute things are pretty quiet. The group continues the casino circuit, playing very short shows clocking in just over 70 minutes. "Future Blues" has become the sole "blues" number and things are rather formula driven. The band has got to be tired by now so you can't really blame them, but then again they agree to do these endless tours so...

Anyone else think the band could tremendously benefit from a dedicated and driven manager who is concentrated solely on ZZ Top? A younger, more energetic Bill Ham would do wonders for helping the band focus their energy into only those ideas and activities that benefit; never thought I would complain of over saturation but maybe taking a year off and then going back to the drawing board would be a good thing for band and audience alike. Everyone deserves a day off. Young fans are imperative to the health of an enterprise, which a modern band is, and the endless stream of baby boomers (who the majority of appear to have endless amounts of discretionary income to throw at multiple shows ever year) don't do anything but create a sense of complacency and predictability. Led Zeppelin hasn't existed in 30 years yet has millions of young fans - why not ZZ? Time to hit the drawing board.

Official website online / Mescalero

ZZ's official website came online yesterday evening, check it out:

http://www.zztop.com/

---

The band has a show later this month in Mescalero, NM - this town is just outside an Indian reserveration and is home to the tribe that inspired in part the fantastic 2003 release from our favorite group. Would be really cool if a live recording shows up, you never know.

Just for fun, the final show - at the Rodeo

So, just for fun, whenever ZZ plays their final show, and if they make it a special affair, I would make an educated guess the performance would be at the Houston Rodeo sometime around 2013 - 2015. And when thinking about what they would play here is my take on an excellent two hour concert that would really send things off right.

Gimme All Your Lovin'
Thank You
Waitin' For the Bus
Jesus Just Left Chicago
Precious and Grace
I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide
Ten Foot Pole
Manic Mechanic
Rough Boy
Mexican Blackbird

Just Got Back From Baby's
Blue Jean Blues
Teddy Bear
Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings
Pearl Necklace
Cheap Sunglasses
Buck Nekkid
Bang Bang
Arrested For Driving While Blind
Just Got Paid
Sharp Dressed Man

Encore:
Viva Las Vegas
Tube Snake Boogie

So, who else wants to say what they feel would be an appropriate final performance?

1994-12-19 Essen, Germany show review (guest commentator)

Today I bring you a new perspective on ZZ Top in the mid-nineties, at the closing days of the massive Antenna album tour, what would ultimately prove to be the last arena and coliseum road trek of their career. Courtesy of my friend Dirk, I give you:

1994-12-19 Essen, Germany

"This show is a marker in many ways, at least as far as I am concerned. And a bit of a long story in the making. To sum up the impact it had on me I have to go back, way back. It was in the early 1970's - not even a teenager yet I was browsing record stores and remember seeing the first ZZ Top LPs there, liking the cool covers but not being in a position to either afford the record or have a device that I could play them on. It wasn´t till the early '80's that ZZ hit me again. MTV played the Eliminator videos and I liked the super cool videos. Just the right blend of cars, girls and Americana. And the music struck me as something I had been looking for a long time but hadn´t found till just then and there. When canned ZZ was played real loud during a major bike event in the area months later my mind went back to the videos and I thought man that music kicks even better when played loud - I must see a ZZ show when they make it to Germany.

It wasn´t until the early 1990's that I saw ZZ Top live in Dortmund, Germany, of which they were the last act to close an evening of fine live entertainment. The other bands slipped my mind, but ZZ stuck. I thought: this is getting better and better. They are way better live than expected, but now I want a full blown ZZ show. Not just them being a part of an evening. I had to wait a few more years. Then came the December night in Essen. Then a 70 mile drive, now my hometown. So Idrove the 70 miles from Aachen with a friend and co-worker of mine. We got to the venue that I was very familiar with.

I had grown up in the area and had seen many shows there, including the first ever concert of my life. So I knew of the location and its accoustic challenges and I did not expect too much. Plus I had learned that usually an opener is just that, nothing special. So we waited for the curtain to open.

When it did we saw banged up amps and an old Leslie rigged to a keyboard. And out came the opening act. Guess when the band appeared on stage many thought what I thought: oh no, not one of these long haired goups again that can´t really play. When the guitarist plugged in his beat up guitar and started into a slide solo effortlessly he proved us all wrong within the first two minutes. The Ian Moore Band rocked! So the mood was set up for a great blues rock night. Just I had no idea yet how great a night this should turn out to be.

After Ian Moore had finished the lights came on again while the stage was cleared of his equipment. He´d been using the front portion of the stage, so the actual full stage was still behind a curtain. Then the venue lights went off. Showtime! Some sound was heared that reminded me of the static and noise you hear when scrolling down the dail of your radio tuner looking for a station you want to hear. When the right channel was found lights came on and the band members stepped thru back lit circular blinds located on the upper back of the stage. With the crowd cheering they assumed their start positions and fell into “World Of Swirl”. And I was swirled into the musical world I had always been looking for and have not left since.

All I saw and heard was so good that my head was spinning, not knowing what to focus on. The pure craftmanship of the three guys. The stage to me being an art deco blend of a radio receiver and a Chevrolet dashboard. The coolness that oozed from every little bit that was done on stage. The finest drum kit I had ever seen. The parade of amazing guitars played thru the night. The showgirls who were any schoolboy´s dream come true. The finest music. Was it the amazing sound? Or the tone that was generated?

As the boyzz moved thru the set-list there was never a dull moment. So exciting to dive into this world. Up to that day I had not made myself familiar with their music catalogue. I only knew what MTV had broadcast and the little bit I had heard in Dortmund a while ago. So essentially all was new. And I loved every second of it. It was my pace, my tone, my beat, and as Marty McFly in Back To The Future once said you could dance to it. And party we did.

As far as sound goes I have already stated that the venue isn´t easy at all. Some architectual things that had made rows of sound engineers scratch their heads. And there I was listening to the best live sound I had heared and have not found paralleld anywhere since. It was loud! It was clear! When Frank whacked the first 2x 3 beats leading into Rough Boy you could feel it as if someone hit you over the forehead with a roof batten. The buzz from Dusty´s bass blended and matched exactly with the groan of the lower tones of Bill´s guitar. It was one combo. The higher tunes from Billy´s guitar were loud and clear but never piercing. But so powerfull. When the Dean Z´s came out you could literally feel how their tone caved your head in.

The cool flashy instruments is one thing. To master them another. To do it in style yet another. To do it like the boyzz did is a whole different ballpark. Every one of the band a perceived master of his instrument, but what they achieve together is nothing less than fine art. Perfect timing for tempo changes and stops. And when they stop, they stop. Not a single sound from anywhere. The roar comes to an abrupt and complete silence. And the boyzz freeze in the same instant. And then, synchronic, it all comes to life again. Not a slow ramp up,  not missing a beat, no offset in their timing. Just ON.

And they meke it look easy. At times Dusty would lean again the art deco stage props playing on, looking relaxed and perfectly at ease with what he was doing. And yet he was completely focused  The band is like a swiss clock work. Only that the swiss clock work is boring. The boyzz are pure cool.

The perfection and craftmanship was so obvious, and it was so entertaining that it was clear this could stand alone. No additional gimmicks needed to keep the audience entertained. And yet it was there. Art deco stage, neon lit guitars and all. And the show girls. When they appaered the crowd went nuts. Be it them behind back lit blinds as the extented rythm section for Breakaway, or as the Lone Wolf Horns during She Loves My Automobile, they were nothing but stunning. Blonde or brunette every one a show stopper for herself. Combined beyond words.

I could go on with the set list. But you can read that up somewhere. This here is supposed to be subjective. And the subjective bit about the set list is that it was about the last time I got to hear a ZZ Top set list that wasn´t a best of compilation but had significant portions of a new album. I miss that.

I miss the tone. Today´s Gretch Billy Bo´s don´t have it
I miss the sound, it hasn´t been that good since.
I miss the girls. Not that they were needed, but man they looked great.
I missed the passion and cool during the Mescalero tour. Glad that is back.

I missed the show so bad that I kept looking for a recording for 17 years. Thanks to Brian I found it.
That night I found my music. It felt like coming home. I guess you know what I mean. And I haven´t left home since. For that and for finest, unmatched, straight A entertainment my thanks go to Frank, Dusty and Billy.

In Response to your Query...

The following is a reply to an e-mail I received that contained a question:

The Virginia Beach show was likely different things to different people. To me it sucked - devoid of creativity, energy, zeal and desire. Truly the epitome of a sluggish, slow dinosaur that roams aimlessly and chews the green leaves (money) of the land.

To the group of 40 something women behind me who spent the majority of time on their iPhones then danced enthusiastically to the Eliminator hits the show was probably pretty good. A lot of songs they didn't know but then again not a very expensive ticket.

And to the hardworking yet somewhat downtrodden men and women who face an ever more uncertain future and an increasingly stressful present the concert was exactly what they needed - an escape to the past when life was easier and responsibilities were few.

The third group is who ZZ are aiming for - looking to tease and please. But you must remember, the ZZ Tops are not musicians...they are entertainers. And there is nothing wrong with being carted away to the living easy past, everyone loves to reminisce, myself included. But underneath the veneer of good faith and fun loving "entertainment" lies the dark allure of the green leaves - sure, you can have a front row seat and an autograph, but you might have to forgo contributing to your child's college education fund this year, or donating to a needy charity, or saving money for a rainy day.

Just who or what exactly is the band playing for...

There once was a group of three musicians who were about the music, who wanted nothing more than to play for their fans and mix it up. But once you attain great success music becomes a business. And in capitalism, businesses exist to make money. But everyone already knows this. The difference is some choose to close their eyes but not their ears, some choose to open both but with a heavy filter, and some simply choose to walk away.

ZZ Top: Atlantic Waves: September 3rd, 2011

Well the power came back on and the house is back in order so I journeyed on out to the beaches of Virginia.

Venue I have to admit was pretty cool. Right on the Atlantic, the stage was literally 100 feet from the water. Beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky. Also very mild temperatures for this time of year, low 80's (F) with no humidity. Couldn't ask for better conditions.

Turns out ZZ was taking part in a major Labor Day festival. Bad Company and Blackfoot were to play later in the day and the next day was to feature Little Feat and several other acts of interest. Tickets were cheap too, $15 face value.

Once again River City Gang opened - they opened earlier this year for the Charlottesville show and I believe last year in Portsmouth. They are more country music in style and somewhat enjoyable. Significant contrast to ZZ - River City is a young, hungry, eager up and coming band who work hard to get the audience involved and often plug their songs and album. I can't remember the last time Billy named one of ZZ's albums on stage.

River City came on at 3:00 pm sharp. Played a long set, till about 3:45. Then they thanked the audience and wrapped things up. Two minutes later they came back and told the crowd they were asked to play a little longer. A faithful rendition of the Stones "Honky Tonk Women" brought things to a final close.

ZZ hit the airwaves at 4:05. I have to say this was the loudest outdoor concert I have ever heard. Dusty's bass practically made the sand jump. Crowd was pretty into it and stood the majority of the show. Very unique audience by the way, mostly beach goers who were there for the festival as a whole, not just ZZ. Not a single ZZ hat or T-shirt was to be found. Again this is Labor Day Weekend so the beach and the city were swarming with people, very crowded everywhere. In light of so many casual fans the audience did not truly come alive until the Eliminator trilogy was reeled off.

Dusty was pretty animated and even lead the audience in some rhythmic clapping. No lite-brite, but two large video screens assisted those with a poor stage view. At one point a close up on the video screen showed an extremely bored and distracted looking Frank Beard - if I wasn't used to this type of demeanor and nonchalant attitude I would be worried that he was about to leave the group. But knowing this is just how he is I suppose it is good that some things never change. Also I don't remember seeing him smoke a single cigarette or drink any Tab, but then again I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention.

Crowd left happy having spent the past hour and ten minutes basked in sunlight, blues rock and alcohol and orderly dispersed into the streets, alleys and boardwalks of the jovial city.

Hurricane Irene; Va Beach VA 2011-09-03; A Look Towards the Future

Well hurricane Irene has come and gone. Having escaped major damage I am limited by no electricity and serenaded by the hum of generators. Very thankful and happy no one in my area was hurt - that is the most important thing.

I have tickets in hand for ZZ's show in Virginia Beach, VA on Sept 3rd. There is a possibility I may not be able to go if I am still without electricity. But the show date is still five days away so hopefully I'll get lucky.

The late summer shows have featured a shorter than usual set list, and for the first time I can remember there is no specific "blues" song being performed. No one works harder than ZZ (at least not anyone over 50 years old) but I'm sure many of us fans would prefer to see the band's energies redirected to more fruitful endeavors.

The group still has a pretty good number of shows to go. Those VIP packages, platinum or gold, are both rather expensive - too rich for my blood however if someone who reads this elects to partake of the experience please write in about your take and thoughts.

In my opinion only it is time to start thinking about the band ending it's aggressive touring days. The European and large scale American tours may come to an end after next year. I am confident the upcoming new release will be the final album from ZZ Top proper; there may be additional tours here and there but if you are holding out on seeing the group one or two or three final times it is probably a good idea to start buying tickets and making plans.

That being said I continue to remain of the mind next year will be very exciting, both with the new album and what is sure to be a new and updated live show. Looking back to the RCA era, both 1996 following Rhythmeen and 2003 during Mescalero were the best tours of latter ZZ. Perhaps 2012 will be another banner trek.

I really hope the group plays the Houston Rodeo next year - the perfect place to debut some new songs. And I would bet my bottom dollar that if the band decides to undertake a "final retirement" show it will occur in Houston in some form or fashion.

As always thank you to everyone for continuing to support this blog. Your comments, suggestions, critiques and criticisms are always welcome.

Have Mercy!

Results of first test for new online promoter ground(ctrl) - FAIL

Ground(ctrl) - ZZ's new online promoter, has issued their first BIG NEWS e-mail. And here it is....ZZ is doing six shows with Lynyrd Skynyrd in October. Ta da!

Big freakin' deal. This is what, the 3rd or 4th time they have toured together? Good news fans, you get to pay higher ticket prices to watch each band play a shortened set! And don't forget, they won't play any songs that are more recent than 20 years old, ensuring they convey the lack of confidence they have in their current artistic, musical and commercial viability.

Here is some news. Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed in Jacksonville, FL. Ground(ctrl) thinks they are from Alabama - wonder where they got that idea from. So much for this new promoter being hip and with it. Here are the requirements to be an employee of these online promotional firms: post graduate undeserved sense of entitlement, wardrobe consisting of wrinkled shirts and khaki pants (much wear sandals every day), spend more time playing video games than working, and conduct the minimal amount of research while maintaining ability to get paid to do crappy work.

More ticket advertisements under the guise of news. This is the kind of crap that makes it hard to be enthusiastic about the current state of music.

Operation "Finale": Part Three: New Album / New website news??

It is indeed official. ZZ, per their Facebook page, has elected to delay the new album until March or April 2012. I do not fear this to be one of the usual delays, the kind that have been happening since 2005. The new album has been recorded, tracked, and mixed. It may not be in its final state however, additional mixing could still take place, even some more overdubs, who knows?

Don't get me wrong, it is very frustrating to have to wait another 4 to 6 months for the new album, but taken in the context of a marketing / publicity / support standpoint this is good news. The band needs to tour in conjunction with the new release, simple as that. Common sense would appear to indicate you shouldn't release a new album then tour six months later, after the shiny new appeal has worn off. This presents ZZ with the opportunity to sell copies of the record at shows, sell shirts promoting the album, hats, whatever. And I have mentioned before, new songs, more than two, need to be played. If the band still wants to keep the show under 90 minutes than drop all the crappy covers and replace them with new material.

It would appear the new album is shaping up to be a winner. Someone even indicated they have heard the record in it's entirety, I believe in the comments section on Youtube for the "Flyin' High" audio track. I don't know how said individual would have heard it however. The comments on Youtube for the song are pretty interesting, be warned however there is some rough language from people that have trouble putting pen to paper.

As long as the record features a mix of styles and arrangements, while retaining that unique ZZ sound and character, sales should be brisk. People are hungry for some good music - today's scene is so abstract and inconsistent that a whole album of strong tunes will be a welcome change. Time for the group to release an official single, just to get the excitement and anticipation going in the general public.

Also, today, for the first time ever, I offer my solid gold guarantee: Every fan across the world would shit themselves if ZZ replaced "Pincushion" with "Driving While Blind" in their live set. That's right, you have my personal guarantee.

Oh, and "Precious and Grace" would be killer as well.

Anybody got any updated news on the official website? When will it be up and running? A lot of fans paid for forum access that they can't currently use. Let's do this thing!

New Album Delayed???

I have received the second indication that the new album will not be coming out until next year, likely in the early spring. This makes a lot of sense when you think about it: Rubin likes things to be pretty perfect, few details have leaked out so far and August is already almost half way over, and ZZ traditionally begins their touring season in early spring, which would be proper timing to tour in support of  the new album.

In March of 2003 ZZ debuted two new Mescalero tracks at the Houston Rodeo. Maybe they will again debut new songs at the Rodeo in 2012.

More on this as details are learned.

Latest update on official website / set list status / Terry Manning discusses Top

Most likely fans are checking the official website every few days or so. Today a new teaser appeared, indicating some of the upcoming features. To join the mailing list simply enter your e-mail address in the white box and click enter (return); you should receive a confirmation if everything went through.

Per Senor Volto there is no exact launch date for the full site, just a matter of getting everything completed and ready to go. I can't imagine it would be too much longer however. Hopefully the new album, complete with artwork and a title, will make its debut on the fan page.

---

No set list changes to date. In fact a few songs have been dropped here and there. It looks like the short gap in September and return in early October would be the logical time and place for new songs to appear. Really important that they tour in support of the new album this time. Mescalero did not get the respect it deserved, even from the band itself.

---

I found this really cool link the other day. Features a lot of technical talk regarding ZZ's recording process on past albums, straight from Terry Manning. Great stuff.

Details of new ZZTOP.com website

Word on the street is that the website will be brand new and run by a completely different company, that
being "ground(ctrl)". Appears they have a number of higher profile clients and are much more "fan-centric" than the prior provider. It is hoped that a real focus on actual news, updates and unique giveaways will be undertaken, a stark contrast to the prior site which was really nothing more than an occasional updated billboard advertisement. A focus on the fan club, including some people that have been around for approaching 30 years, is also imperative. I myself, and likely many others, will not mind paying a membership fee if it includes real dividends. Here's hoping.

Set List Update

Same old set list in Big Flats, NY on Sunday July 31st. The show was co-headlined with Lynyrd Skynyrd however. If anyone receives info regarding a set list with new additions please let us know. Thanks

!!!! Billy Speaks.... !!! / !!! ZZTop.com - another change !!!

Gibson published an online article yesterday featuring some new information and sound bites from Billy concerning the new album. The feature can be found here:

http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/News/zz-top-0728-2011/

Indeed the new info is very exciting. Great to finally hear some song titles. "Have a Little Mercy" sounds like a winner to me,  and "Chartreuse" is a high brow and historic brand of French wine known for it's assertive flavor (extra piquant if you please!). I'm not completely sold on "More Slower Blues" which apparently features one chord over and over, but if it is more "Stockings" than "Rig" count me in.

It is also good news to see that Joe Hardy was again involved in the sessions, as he undoubtedly contributes creatively and enthusiastically to the band's recording. It also is obvious the band takes his input seriously as he has received songwriting credit in the past.

I for one am very glad some of the sessions took place in Houston, as they should. I raise a questions: does anyone else wonder if just Billy and Rubin worked and recorded in Malibu, while the band as a whole along with Rubin recorded in Houston?

I have touched on the subject of the band's songwriting process in the past. As the RCA era progressed Dusty and Frank received less and less songwriting credits. Check out Mescalero - Dusty and Frank are only credited on two songs ("Kid" and "Sanctify"). In order for this to feel like Tres Hombres with a touch of Eliminator the whole band must have been involved in the writing process. If this album is again dominated by Billy's ideas the album will sound like Eliminator with a touch of Tres Hombres. Do you know what I mean?

Needless to say this is a very exciting time to be a Top fan. This may indeed serve to be the last new album so we as fans must relish every moment. Tell your friends. Buy the music magazines that hopefully come out with articles about the new album. Buy the vinyl copy, buy the compact disc copy, buy the T-shirt. Enjoy this moment.

It would be very exciting if Billy started dropping hints about the new album at their upcoming USA shows, which begin July 31st. Even better would be to play a new song or two, but that would blow my mind.

I can't wait to hear what's in store.

Change to ZZ Top's Offical Website

There is a new intro screen when you first type zztop.com

Features the Mescalero character holding a bottle of "Pura Vida". The direct translation is "Pure Life". Depending on the context it can also mean "Great Life", "Fine Life" or "Well Life".

Perhaps this is the title of the new album; hard to tell. Hopefully more news will come soon.

Operation "Finale": Part Two: Publicity

This aspect of the plan ties in with marketing. When it comes to promoting a new album it doesn't necessarily take a lot of money, not these days anyhow. In my estimation the group could benefit from the following:

1) Totally revamp the offical ZZ Top website. It really is nothing more than an advertisement for upcoming shows and events, as well as trying to plug merchandise. There have been some cool things in the past, for example the Double Down Live tour blog that was posted in the fall of 2009 during the Canadian tour. But the majority of the time the "updates" are nothing more than promotions. ZZ should have kept the original organizers of the ZZ Top Fan Club, they were such fans of the group and were so dedicated that they likely would have done the web site for free. Currently the offical site is run by a corporation that works on many bands, and for the most part doesn't know the first thing about ZZ. And the fact you have to pay to participate in the forum is absurd.

2) Billy is a member of twitter however only occasionaly posts anything. This is fine, twitter is not really my thing and it is not surprising that Billy is not that into it either - he is not really in the target age group. But as a publicity tool twitter is great. Maybe Billy could start tweeting his thoughts on the new album, reveal some song titles to build some excitement, mention a possible release date, etc.

3) It would be very cool for ZZ to post on YouTube or some other FREE medium a sneak peak at the new album, whether it be some 30 second samples of new songs or video footage of the band in the recording studio. If I recall correctly Chickenfoot did this a few years ago when promoting their new album and the results were fantastic.

4) Release a downloadable single through iTunes or Amazon. I can't see anybody having a problem with paying $0.99 for a new song from their favorite band. We heard the Billy single "Flyin' High", now how about a group song?

5) Release promo copies to the press. This would allow the media to start talking about the album well before the release date. The more talk the better. Maybe even send promo copies to ZZ Top blog sites (hint hint).

As I write this it is already mid July. We should be getting some additional details about the album soon: release date, name of the record, song titles, etc.

Anybody else notice the group has a four week break between early September and early October. If I had to guess I would reason Billy and perhaps the other members will be making the final touches and approvals on the final mixes of the new album during this break. We'll see.

Just a Jam??

Anybody know anything or have more video / audio of Billy's jam at Cognac, France on 2011-07-7? Wonder if this is part of a song or just a spontaneous jam.

Operation "Finale": Part One: Marketing

Operation "Finale":

     Log One:

          Marketing:

Much has been said, and most of it true, regarding the lack of effort and financing by RCA on advertising of ZZ's four post "Recycler" albums. Each album received less and less promotion, to the point where "Mescalero" was put out almost as an afterthought.

To be fair "Antenna" did receive a fair amount of push, to include TV spots and interviews, radio shows, flyers, posters and singles. What could not be overcome however is the substandard quality of the record. While there were several bright spots the album as a whole found the band somewhat "lost" on the type of sound they were trying to emulate. It was neither a return to roots nor a continuation of the 80's pop formula; rather a somewhat disjointed set of pieces that didn't make a complete puzzle. The album sold decently, but in no way met the needed sales to help recover the $35 million RCA signed ZZ for. And it would appear that it immediately became evident to RCA that they paid too much; as a result they were going to be much less "generous" in their future promotions.

A fellow Top fan (I apologize for not recalling his name) pointed out that "Rhythmeen" was what "Antenna" should have been, meaning that if "Rhythmeen" had come out in 1994 then ZZ would have been heralded as a revitalized working band. "Rhythmeen" is in my opinion the best record ZZ has done in 28 years - but the disappointment of "Antenna" was the last chance the band had to hang on to a large share of fans. They simply were not interested anymore by 1996.

"XXX" received little mainstream promotion, and it didn't help that ZZ elected to only play one new song from the album throughout the 1999/2000 US tour, choosing rather to cater to the casual fans by wearing out "Cheap Sunglasses" night after night.

Nothing in ZZ's career can top RCA's blundering of "Mescalero". Clive Davis, for reasons which I can only assume were the hope of greater profits, told the band he felt "there is more we can do" after "Mescalero" was completed; he wanted to give it the Santana "Supernatural" treatment. Sure, that worked great for Santana, but it was largely a fluke. ZZ was a working three piece band, not an individual that doesn't sing. ZZ wisely did nothing, and six months later the album was released to minimal reception. Shame really, it is a great album. Hard to believe too that Bill Ham would let all that go down, he had obviously lost the drive and love for his greatest band; maybe that's why two years later he found himself relieved of his duties, who knows?

Anyway, nearly a decade later here we are. Time to learn from the mistakes.

If I am in the inner circle, and the discussion of "what should we talk about when promoting the new album" comes up, the focus has got to about the fans and being honest with them. Here is what I would say are important points to make when marketing the new album and the current version of ZZ Top:

1) The band has been together for 41 years and counting, with all original members still intact
2) This is the band's first album in eight years
3) All three members can still play their respective instruments
4) They put on a good live show and can be seen in a town near you
5) ZZ has a rich heritage of tradition and still wish to create new music

Then, when executing the plan, do this:

- Get an exclusive deal through a retailer or something similar if that helps sales and promotion. But make it temporary, and don't gouge prices. AC/DC did this with their newest album after the better part of a decade with no new music, and apparently it sold very well.
- Set a firm release date and keep it.
- Release a single or two prior to the release date to build up anticipation
- Advertise - in music magazines, music stores, online, maybe even TV.
- Sell the album through both Compact Disc and Vinyl, and let this fact be known
- Do interviews with ALL THREE MEMBERS
- Promote the album through a tour. And for the love of God play the new songs during the tour. It is official Billy, your market has been saturated - too many shows, too few surprises. I have been listening to lip-synced versions of "Party On the Patio" since late 2009, and I don't like it anymore now than I did then.
- Play songs from the new album during the tour.
- Play songs from the new album during the tour.
- Play songs from the new album during the tour.
- Play songs from the new album during the tour.
- Sell the new albums at concerts.
- Take creative control of band merchandise. Sell higher quality clothing and promotional items. Actually look at the stuff you are putting in front of fans at the shows in the merchandise booths. Sell stuff that talks about the new album. No more "Can't Stop Rockin" shirts - I mean come on, you want me to pay $25 for a shirt that says "Can't Stop Rockin" and falls apart the first time it is washed. And don't charge more for the same stuff at shows than on the internet; believe it or not people actually look at prices when they shop. Are you aware the country is experiencing hard economic times? The fans are already paying up to $100 a ticket to watch you play "I Need You Tonight" for the 245th time, simply because you can play the same solo note for note one handed every night and point at people at the same time, thinking that impresses people. That gimmick is not worth $100. Play the instrument like you still have a desire and passion for your craft. Stevie Ray Vaughn played with his teeth, now that is impressive.
- Don't patronize your fans. Without their support you have nothing.
And finally...
- Don't give me that return to form crap. Billy always says "La Grange"..."Return to roots"..."Tex-Mex"..., etc. These are just soundbites, Billy is just saying what comes easily to his mind, what he knows people want to hear. Every time he is asked about the new album, he doesn't think about the answer, he doesn't show any passion in his response, he's not telling it like it is, he just reels off one-liners. It's bullshit. Do any of the people who have heard "Flyin' High" think it sounds anything like "La Grange"? Does it sound anything like "Tex-Mex". SERIOUSLY?!! The group needs to actually talk openly, truthfully and candidly about the new album. Don't give me some line that you think I want to hear. Do the album and music for yourselves, not for numbers or popularity. People see through this, they are not as dumb as Billy apparently thinks they are. Honesty is going to be a big part of this topic. Honesty has got to happen, now.

I would argue that if the band subscribes to at least one of the above points it will help promote the group and the new album.
---

It is plain to see I am in no way shape or form in the inner circle. I can only assume my thoughts and opinions would be incredibly unpopular. But I am a paying customer, and there seems to be one or two people who tend to agree with my current take on the band.

Don't let it end like this. Bring it back to how it should be. Make the effort, cherish the moments, and reward the fans - in turn you will restore all the rightful glory and prestige to America's greatest band, ZZ Top.

Operation: "Finale"

Operation: "Finale"
Log One (1): Marketing:
Log Two (2): Publicity
Log Three (3): New Album
Log Four (4): Live Revision
Log Five (5): Sendoff
Log Six (6): "The Finale"

Operation: "Finale"
Mission Statement: "Restoring, refining and reigniting the fine ZZ Top tradition of tone, taste and tenacity by returning to basics, making it simple, and keeping it honest; with the goal of bringing proper closure to the final chapter of that Little 'Ol Band from Texas".

-----

Over the course of six posts I will comment on what I opine to be a favorable and appropriate way to finalize what may indeed be the final chapter of our favorite band. Having taken 8+ years to get out the new (and still untitled) album I do not see another one in the future, especially if Dusty and Frank receive as little writing credit as they did on "Mescalero" (which indicates they are losing interest in making music). It is likely that Billy will continue on, but one can argue with significant evidence that the band itself is winding down. It is my hope that they release the new album, it sells well, the band tours throughout the US, Europe and the UK, they return to playing real live "honest" songs, and they finish up receiving the notoriety and recognition they deserve.

European Trek, 2011

ZZ begins their summer European jaunt tomorrow (June 25th) in what I believe is Switzerland. Comprising 16 shows, the focus is heavy on France with three shows in Spain at the end, including Madrid on July 14th. There has been some criticism regarding the lack of U.K. dates and to be honest it would likely have been better to encompass a greater area. But ZZ hit some spots last year that they rarely go to so it apparently wasn't in the cards this time around.

I do not anticipate any of the upcoming album's songs will be played. It is hoped however that they mix it up; there has been a two and a week gap since the last U.S. show and they flew over to Europe several days ago. Hopefully they took some time to rehearse some different songs. One can hope.

I am hopeful a few recordings surface as well. ZZ is well received in Europe and always put on a good performance. A good friend in France plans to record one show so that will be great. If anyone gets a copy of the set list from the first few shows please post it here. Thanks!

Home Sweet Home

I thought I would share this since its kind of cool. Also Dusty no longer lives there so it is not an invasion of privacy or anything like that.

Pretty sweet place if I say so myself. San Leon is a small community southeast of Houston on Galveston Bay. The pictures don't show it but Dusty apparently had a great view of the water as well.

Billy Gibbons Interview Broadcast June 20th, 2011

A local Houston, TX newscast will be airing a Billy Gibbons interview the morning of June 20th. This will likely be a five to ten minute segment during which Billy may discuss his influences and takes on music, ZZ Top's current tour schedule and, hopefully, some details on the forthcoming new album. This is likely not the forum for "huge" details, such as a release date, but maybe we'll get lucky just the same.

New Song "Flyin' High" now available online; Thoughts on "Flyin High"

Not to worry, some kind individuals have posted a link to "Flyin High" on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn7boyyKHQA

Obviously the ZZ fan community has been very excited to hear this new song. A lot of discussion has taken place, a little bit negative but mostly very positive. While some have noted the high production and slickness of the track there is also enough rock influence and traditional ZZ Top aspects to make the song a winner.

Over the past six years the group has worked with multiple people with varying intensity as songs were slowly built for the forever forming new album. To that end it is likely that some songs will have the influence of The Black Keys, some will have Rick Rubin's influence and others will be impacted by Jimi Jamison, who apparently has worked rather extensively with the group in the past.

For what it's worth, and this is merely my unprofessional opinion and I have no specific or inside knowledge, I believe this to be a collaboration more or less between Billy and perhaps Jamison. The song seemingly has very little evidence of Dusty or Frank. Perhaps they are the rhythm section and perhaps they are not. Billy has been known to play bass on songs in the past, and the drums, even if the basic tracking is Frank, definetly have some drum machine help. Similar to some Mescalero songs, this sounds more like a Billy solo composition than a ZZ Top song. Don't get me wrong, I really like the song. I just tend to analyze things.

I really hope we get at least 5-7 songs where Billy, Dusty and Frank sat in a room together, wrote some music and lyrics, and recorded it live in the studio.

---

There is also talk that this may indeed be ZZ's last album. There is some evidence to support this. I'll save the topic for a future blog entry.

ZZ Top - Charlottesville, VA May 29th

Here is video footage of the May 29th show I attended in Charlottesville, VA. Starts about 30 seconds into "La Grange" and shows how the song received a very short rendition before transitioning into "Tush". I wish I had been able to capture the fake walk-off by Dusty and Frank but I was too caught off guard. Obviously the video does not show it but it was about 94 degrees fahrenheit with about 90% humidity, even though it was about 9:30. Just past dusk, gets dark in the area about 9:00 pm this time of year. Keep in mind the video footage is not perfect, I had to tape up high at an angle as the guy in front of me had a rather large head. Oh well, it is in HD and still pretty cool I think. I have two other videos which I will post later in the week. Enjoy

!!! Link to "FLYIN' HIGH" is gone...

Looks like the content under NASA's page has changed. The clean MP3 of "Flyin' High" is no longer available. Now there are two links: one to a video of the rocket take-off with Flyin High in the background, and the second with the audio of the take-off with Flyin High in the background. Hope everyone saved the MP3 to their computer prior to the change.

!!!! LINK TO ZZ'S NEW SONG

"Flyin' High"

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition28/exp28_zztop.html

Wow...a New Song! "Flyin' High"

Appears that at least one person outside of the group and their associated producers has gotten to hear a brand new ZZ Top song. Astronaut Michael Fossum, a friend of ZZ, was provided a copy of the Top's new song "Flyin High" from their still untitled new album prior to his depature into space. No word on when the general public will be given a chance to listen.

Note the article indicates the song is set at 120 beats per minute, which is the exact pace and speed of many of Eliminator's tracks.

Charlottesville, VA 2011-05-31 Show Review

Well I attended tonight's show in Charlottesville in person. Very interesting performance, not necessarily for the best of reasons.

First, the formality of the set list:

01) Got Me Under Pressure
02) Waitin' For the Bus
03) Jesus Just Left Chicago
04) Pincushion
05) I'm Bad I'm Nationwide
06) Future Blues
07) Rock Me Baby
08) Cheap Sunglasses
09) My Head's In Mississippi (snippet)
10) I Need You Tonight
11) Hey Joe
12) Brown Sugar
13) Gimme All Your Lovin'
14) Sharp Dressed Man
15) Legs
16) La Grange
17) Tush

To clarify: - no Just Got Paid. No new songs. No different songs. And no break / encore.

Concert began around 8:00. Outdoor pavilion. Very, very hot. Probably about 92 degrees in the beginning, with 90%+ humidity. Crowd was very into the performance, with the vast majority of the audience standing for the entire show.

Stage set up largely unchanged. Frank had the skull kit on display. Texicali shirts worn by Dusty and Billy with Future Farmers of America badges. Alley Kat presented the blues hat, Billy's wife Gilligan was no where to be seen. Some new choroeogrophy during "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide".

Billy seemed to be frustrated with his guitars / tuning at several points during the show. He walked over to the soundmen stage left after Pincushion and pounded his fist on the table, seemingly unhappy about the PA. And prior to "My Head's In Mississippi" he requested a new guitar from Elwood, announcing his current axe was out of tune. Any tuning issues were likely due to the heat and humidity, which can wreck havoc to guitar strings.

All members appeared trim and fit. Billy skinny as usual, perhaps less animated than in recent years. Dusty's beard has returned to an above average length and his hair is particularly long, much more so than in many years. Frank was very reserved, chain smoking as usual, and making no effort to acknowledge the crowd.

Throughout the show one had the sense the band was in a hurry. Billy did not introduce himself or Frank, and only Dusty was acknowledged after Nationwide, which featured very fluently bass work showcasing Dusty's still potent skills. Billy did little jamming in between songs and did not "play" with his guitar in between tunes as he usually does as of late. The lack of "Just Got Paid" was highly disappointing as this song always proves to be the highlight of the night. This hurry culiminated in the encore "performance". After Legs Frank left his drum stool and Dusty sat down his bass. Both began to walk backstange. Billy however motioned to Elwood and was immediately supplied with his regular axe and relieved of the furry guitar. He then launched into "La Grange". Dusty and Frank quickly hurried back to their respective instruments and joined in. The version of "La Grange" was the absolute shortest I have every heard. I'm serious - I have over 350 ZZ concerts in my collection and have attended many shows as well. This version was under three minutes - I know this because I recorded the song on a video camera. I have never heard a version under 4 minutes 15 seconds before. No "Sloppy Drunk" or "Bar B Que". They then launched into "Tush". Regular version with no real fan fare or screaming from Dusty. Last note played and Frank walks down and bows with Dusty and Billy. They then leave the stage. "Exercise is Good for You" begins playing but only for approx one minute. The crowd chants "ZZ Top, ZZ Top" to no avail. They do not come back. The audience was stunned. Even I was surprised. I checked their schedule on the official site and it shows Charlotte on 06/02, only 6 hours away and not for two days. I have no idea why they were in such a hurry, but the people who suffered were the fans.

This is the EXACT same set list as the last time I saw the group, which was LAST YEAR. Except they didn't play "Just Got Paid" and destroyed "La Grange". I will not be seeing the group again until they stop insulting me and their fans.

In the name of all the lifetime fans, the true followers and the true believers, our only hope lies in the still lingering anticipation of a new album. ZZ has truly reached a staleness, a passive and dismissive spectacale, a parody of themselves and their once intimidating and engaging presence. We can only hope they recover from this lowest of lows and reclaim perhaps 10% of their former glory.

Essen Germany 1980 Official Live CD Release

Looks like an offical release of ZZ's 1980 performance at Rockpalast in Essen Germany will be coming to CD. Real shame though - in order to bring it down to just one disc a number of great songs from the show have been omitted. The usual pandering to the general public in efforts to make profits at the expense of the long time fans who have been here since the beginning.

The Vault - 1980's Part II

05/28/1982 - Dortmund, Germany

Professional filmed, this video features a heavily animated and energized ZZ. Showcasing relative rarities such as "Groove Little Hippie Pad" there is a heavy does of "El Loco" material. Never officialy released, bootleg copies only feature about 9 or 10 songs, which may have been all that was broadcast. No doubt the entire show was filmed. Sure would be cool to see it.

05/31/1982 - Pink Pop Festival, Netherlands

Professional filmed. Never officially released. Only three songs are available, and the quality of the video is several generations removed from the master. Likely more songs were recorded. This would make a great companion to Dortmund 1982 if somone would take the hint.

10/09/1983 - Houston, TX

Filmed from a distance. Only a few songs available. Never officially released, perhaps because of the quality of the recording.

10/17/1983 - Stockholm, Sweden

Professional filmed. Never offically released to my knowledge. Only five songs, which on all the copies I have seen are likely out of order - which leads me to believe more songs were actually recorded. Older and very reserved crowd - funny to watch.

11/17/1983 - The Tube, Europe

Professionally filmed and offically released as a DVD with the 25th Anniversary Eliminator set. Three "Eliminator" songs and "Tube Snake Boogie". This may have been all the songs that were recorded, and the "live" aspect is somewhat in question.

1984-1989 ????

Suddenly that's it. There may be more video of ZZ in the 1980's but I'm not currently aware of it. It is likely that a number of concerts from the Afterburner tour were professionally recorded, but no bootleg copies have ever circulated. Would be cool to see though.

Next up, you guessed it - the 1990's

Top & Skynyrd; Australia recording; set list ideas for June; T for Tequila; Possible name for new album

Well the relatively short Top and Skynyrd tour collaboration began last night in Wichita, KS. I have not yet seen any set lists or reviews of the show so if anyone comes across something interesting please let us know. It would be cool if Billy or even the entire group jammed with Skynyrd on some encore tracks, as has happened in the past with Brooks & Dunn and Aerosmith.
---
A recording of ZZ's performance in Sydney, Australia on April 28th has surfaced. It shows the group in a favorable light, with a high energy performance and enthusiasm from all members. There are subtle differences in some of the songs that help to differentiate what is otherwise a stale set list.
---
As I previously noted I will be seeing ZZ in Charlottesville the first night after Skynyrd's departure from the road paved by the Top. After some considerable thought I would absolutely be floored and excited to hear one, just one, of the following:

1) Dust My Broom (complete)
2) My Head's In Mississippi (complete)
3) Arrested For Driving While Blind
4) Rhythmeen
5) Precious & Grace

Here's hoping.
---
"Well now T's for Tequila, you gonna love my Texas tea... Well now T's for Tequila, you gonna love my Texas Tea."
Something tells me the phrase "T's for Tequila" will have a substantially more meaningful impact by the end of the year.

My best and most educated guess for the name of the as yet untitled new album: "Texicali"

The Vault - 1970's addition and 1980's Part I

Vault - Addition to 1970's

Warehouse, New Orleans 1974 - How could I forgot the infamous live side one of "Fandango". Featuring "Thunderbird", "Jailhouse Rock" and "Backdoor Medley" the live capture and sound, especially on the remastered CD release, is pretty impressive. There is no doubt that several concerts around this time period were recorded in their entirety. I have many shows from this era but they are all recorded from the audience and have nowhere near as good of sound quality. The band was also on top of their game during the early days and shows were consistently amazing. Why not put out an audio release of a show from this period? I'm guessing it would sell quite well.

Vault - 1980's - Part One

The 80's have more video of ZZ Top than any other decade. Having returned from hiatus Bill Ham was keen on further pushing the popularity of his greatest act. Hence...

04/20/1980 - Rockpalast - a concert in the Spring of 1980 in Essen, Germany - professional filmed and transmitted throughout Europe. ZZ went on after midnight so the date is 04/20, not 04/19. This concert more than any other event got the word out about the Top. No longer were they Nationwide, they were International. An incredible performance with the group pulling out all the stops, even debuting an early pre-LP version of "Tube Snake Boogie". No surprise this was released as an official DVD. Why stop here?

1980 - Old Grey Whistle Test - Featuring a performance of "Cheap Sunglasses", this finds the group performing with no audience. Professionally filmed and great sound, but sort of a weird vibe.

04/21/1980 - Paris - One and a half days after Essen the group was again professionally filmed. What has leaked out contains about 1/2 of the concert. Good, but not great sound, and also somewhat diminished video. No question that there is a pristine copy of this show in it's entirety sitting in Billy's office. Sell it and people will buy it.

The Vault - 1970's

What's in the Vault? What is the Vault? Who owns the Vault?

For the purpose of this entry and several entries to follow, the Vault will serve as the professionally filmed material of Messrs Gibbons, Hill and Beard. Over the years a number of concerts have been recorded and assumedly preserved for some future, although ultimately ignored, endeavor or venture. Likely due to Bill Ham's former white knuckle grip on the group very little of this material has ever been made public; what has been is not in it's entirety. More on the reasons for this later on.

Starting with the 1970's...

1976 - Video - Largo, MD

Featuring a performance of "Chevrolet" this video shows the group pre-beards and looking ever bit the part of young and hungry rising stars. Good sound and fair video make this clip highly desirable. Currently the video is easily found on Youtube via the search function.

An early 1990's documentary on the group featured live footage from this time period, in much better video and audio quality than the section available on Youtube. It is likely the documentary footage is the Largo, MD show - but then again the band were known (and still are) to wear the same stage outfit night after night. Maybe the documentary footage is from another night in '76, or perhaps later in '77 as part of the World Wide Texas Tour.

1977 - Video - World Wide Texas Tour

Some low quality audience shot material exists, with limited date and city information. Very likely that at least one concert was filmed in its entirety.

12/30/1977 - Video?? - San Antonio, TX

An above average  (for the time period) audience recording exists of this show. The performance features a very early and embryonic performance of "I Thank You", two years before it would make it to vinyl. "Neighbor Neighbor" and several rarities from Rio Grande Mud are also played; it would appear either the band knew this would be one of the last shows for awhile (turns out almost two years) or Mr. Ham requested they put on a special performance for his cameras - which he has been known to do and will be discussed later.

12/31/1977 - Ft. Worth, TX - video

Average quality video and audio shows the band performing "Arrested for Driving While Blind" as the countdown to the New Year approaches. The band stops the song early  and counts down with the audience, then plays "Auld Lang Syne" while hundreds of balloons drop from the venue's rafters. Very likely that more of this show was recorded and is hiding away somewhere. Sure would be nice to see it.

-----

If "Double Down Live" featuring Germany 1980 can be released in excellent quality than certainly some of the above material could be publicly sold as well. Anything from the World Wide Texas Tour would undoubtedly sell very well. This video, and other similar material, could be owned solely by Mr. Ham. Hard to tell - more discussion later.

Anyone who knows of more footage from the 1970's please comment. It wold be very interesting to know.

Big Sydney; Charlottesville VA; Thoughts

As I post this (8:15 PM Eastern Standard Time) ZZ is in between the two big Australia shows, namely 27/04/2011 and 28/04/2011 in Sydney. These are the final shows of what appears to have been a very successful and enjoyable endeavor. None of the news reports / concert reviews have been very detailed however so specifics are hard to come by. The set list was posted earlier and as mentioned was not particularly exciting or inspiring.

I am hopeful that at least one of the Sydney concerts will be recorded and circulated. I am aware of a number of tapers in the area that frequent rock and hard rock concerts so it is hoped a recording from OZ, the first I am aware of since Melbourne 1987, will become available.

-----

I have purchased tickets to my first show of the year: May 31st in Charlottesville, VA, USA. I chose this location due to the close proximity to my home but also the fact that it is the first show in the US without Lynyrd Skynyrd. This means the set list should be longer and more exciting, hopefully including some rarities and obscurities that likely will not be played during the one hour set when co-headlining with Skynyrd. I am very hopeful, but realistic, in my anticipation of the playlist. I do not however expect any new songs from the promised new album; those will likely be played in late summer and early autumn when ZZ returns from Europe, if they are played at all.

-----

If anybody is attending the Charlottesville show let me know, I'm happy to meet up beforehand.

Tour in Progress

Initial reviews of the Australian and New Zealand shows have been positive. This is not surprising however. Media reviews are generally done by people who see 100+ shows a year, and are highly unlikely to have an in-depth knowledge of any particular band. This is not a criticism, just a fact.

And I imagine the shows have been great for the vast majority of fans in attendance. The band gives the people what they want, which is apparently to only hear songs that were written 28 years ago or more. It is absolutely critical that the band mix up the set list when they come back to America; the main problem is it likely will not be until after they get rid of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band always plays shortened sets when they are co-headlining (or getting second billing) - thus "Cheap Sunglasses" times twelve.

As much as the band tours surely casual fans must notice how similar the shows are. Same intro music, same choreography, same fuzzy guitars, same beards (just kidding!). Seriously though, fans are not going to keep paying hard earned money to see the same thing, are they?

The band absolutely must, must change the set list later this year. And they must play songs off the promised, but as yet unseen, new album. More than two songs, not the same bullshit as Mescalero where they played only "Buck Nekkid" and "Piece"; like seven new songs, as during the "Rhythmeen" era.

Sometimes the same crap gets old...

Melbourne, Australia 2011-04-18: Setlist

Here is the setlist for the show:

01) Got Me Under Pressure
02) Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago
03) Pincushion
04) I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide
05) 2000 Blues  (this is likely to be "Future Blues")
06) Rock Me Baby
07) My Head's In Mississippi (intro)/I Need You Tonight
08) Hey Joe
09) Brown Sugar
10) Party On The Patio
11) Just Got Paid
12) Give Me All Your Lovin'
13) Sharp Dressed Man
14) Legs
Encore
15) La Grange/Sloppy Drunk Bar-B-Q
16) Tush

No changes from 2010. One could argue since the band hasn't played in Australia since 2000 any show would have been new to fans. Still, somewhat lazy in my opinion.

Hamilton, New Zealand 2011-04-16

First review of the show:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/4898169/ZZ-Top-rocks-Hamilton

Far from detailed. Seems to be more self-promoting of the race event than an actual review of ZZ's performance. Mentions they played for one hour, unsure if the show was actually this short.

More details as they become available.

ZZ Top - Opening Night - Hamilton, New Zealand 2011-04-16

First video from the show has appeared on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bx5sVA7j0g

Limited details at the moment.

Some distance from camera to stage so stage setup / equipment details are hard to make out. The fake speaker stacks are now linear in appearance, rather than the somewhat foolish looking disjointed diagonal version. Video screen at the back mostly consists of colorful "images" - no footage of the members in their younger days.

I have sent a message to the uploader inquiring if he has the set list from the show.

Will update as more information becomes available.

ZZ Top - Launch in less than two weeks

The 2011 touring season kicks off in less than two weeks - April 16th in Hamilton, New Zealand to be exact. I have reached out to a fellow fan who will be attending the April 18th concert in Melbourne hoping he will agree to send me a set list after the show - it will be greatly appreciated.

I usually make some predictions around this time each year and will do so again. Despite multiple indications that ZZ have been in the studio I do not anticipate any new songs being played - ZZ unfortunately plays it more and more safe each year so playing something new would be a small miracle. Stranger things have happened so we can always hope. I would estimate new songs will be played after the July European shows, possibly upon a return to the US in the fall, which is supposedly when the new album is to be released.

Here are my hopes for a set list. This is an unlikely mix but nonetheless something that real fans and long time followers would love to hear:

01) Thank You
02) Gimme All Your Lovin'
03) Pincushion
04) Waitin' For the Bus
05) Jesus Just Left Chicago
06) I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide
07) Precious and Grace
08) Brown Sugar
09) Fool For Your Stockings
10) Dust My Broom
11) Pearl Necklace
12) Arrested for Driving While Blind
13) Sharp Dressed Man
14) Legs
15) La Grange
Encore:
16) Just Got Paid
17) Jailhouse Rock
18) Tush

Please comment with your hopes for the 2011 set list.  Thanks!

Billy Gibbons - New Album This Year

The following are recent direct quotes from Mr. Willie G.     -

ZZ Top "In full production" of a new album
New album is predicted to be out "by the end of the year"

This would be the best indication yet of a new album hitting the shelves this year. Let's hope the band and management stay on track and make it happen.

Have Mercy!

New Album Release Date Rumors

One of my good friends in France ( I have several!) has advised a French newspaper recently indicated a fall 2011 release date for ZZ's new album.

As it currently stands this is strictly a rumor. These type of indications have been sent out before, only to result in nothing. Remember when the offical ZZ Top web page talked about a new album over a year ago and nothing happened? Still it is exciting to see these little hints and all things do point to the band being in the studio and recording. Let's hope for the best.

If anybody hears anything please post in the comments. Thank you!

Dust My Broom / In the Studio / Hot Sauce / Australia

Okay, three good things can be taken from the below link.

1) Billy got up on the stage and started playing "Dust My Broom". Let's hope this song stays on his mind throughout 2011 - great track, need to bring it back with Dusty on lead vocals. Time to dump "Future Blues".

2) Billy was quoted as saying he is in the studio with his bandmates working on a new album. Please let that be true.

3) Billy is coming out with his own hot sauce. Have mercy.

Lastly, are there any fans from Down Under that read this blog? If so please let yourself be heard and help us with finding out the set lists from the upcoming OZ tour. Thank you!

Is a new ZZ Top record a "ZZ Top" record?

Since around the time of El Loco (and possibly Deguello) ZZ Top has had outside musicans contribute, both musically and creatively, to their albums. These musicans are, with a few exceptions, not credited for their work. Excluding Eliminator, which has a relatively well known issue of major contributions coming from an uncredited producer (enough info on that for a blog entry by itself), Afterburner all the way through to Mescalero likely feature varying degrees of uncredited players. I would be very surprised to find out that Dusty is actually the one playing all those keyboards and synthesizers on "I Got the Message" and "Doubleback".

But the purpose of this writing is not to speculate on who played what and how much this or that person contributed to a track, but rather to address the apparent decrease in the band working as a consise, united and creative force. Around the time of Deguello Dusty and Frank, tired of being second tier to Billy, requested to be treated equally with regard to writing credits for each song. Henceforth each song was attributed to Gibbons/Hill/Beard. And it stayed that way until Antenna, where all songs except four were attributed to the band (four were credited solely to Billy). With each subsequent album however there are less attributed to the three and more to Billy and individuals working in the studio (soundmen, producers, etc.). Mescalero had only two tracks (if you count the Japanese bonus song) attributed to the actual band members.

Now I don't really believe that Dusty and Frank contributed to every song on El Loco or Afterburner or Recycler - my point is they are likely becoming less and less interested in ZZ Top, as a viable entity anyway. It seems that Billy still actively writes and certainly records, as evident through his work with other artists. As previously mentioned he likely has 40 to 50 songs in various stages of completion. However Dusty and Frank seem to show little interest in being in the studio and recording. And with 1) Billy being the only writer, and 2) the propensity of so many other people to play instruments on their albums, just how much is a new ZZ Top record really a "ZZ Top" record? Just how wide is the line between a Billy solo album and a ZZ Top album? Was Mescalero a Billy solo album?

I'm likely overthinking it, as a big fan tends to do. The band has probably always operated this way to some degree since the very beginning, and the process is just continuing. Still I would rather see a lot of Gibbons/Hill/Beard than a little.

ZZ Top - second Spring tour date announced

Looks like ZZ may indeed be touring with Lynyrd Skynyrd this year. A second date (after Lubbock TX on May 9th) has been announced: May 20th in Big Flats, NY.

I'm thinking about attending this show. If anybody is going and would like to meet up send me a message.

Anybody heard anything regarding the new album? Are recording sessions taking place?

Solo album ~ ZZ Top album

In response to the recent rumor of a pending Mr. Gibbons' solo album a fan quickly, and rather correctly, pointed out that Billy already had a solo album - Eliminator.

In a collaborative effort with an uncredited producer (a long story more fit for it's own post) Billy slowly removed both Dusty's and Frank's contributions to the rough draft of Eliminator. In the case of Frank he was replaced with sequencers and drum machines. In Dusty's case his bass parts were replaced by lines laid down by Billy. That technical bass work on "Thug" - that's Billy. Dusty couldn't get it right, at least according to Billy at the time.

Initially Frank took great offense to being replaced by what he thought to be another drummer. When Billy explained it was a drum machine, not another player, Frank reluctantly relented. Dusty didn't seem to mind, at least he didn't verbalize any complaints. Billy could now lay down his virtuoso guitar licks with a perfect rhythm section. It could be theorized that this approach was partly the result of Billy's dissatisfaction with Frank's playing on "El Loco" and the apparent decline in Frank's skills, resulting from a decrease in practicing after he got off drugs and alcohol.

Based on Billy's increasing influence on the production of ZZ's albums starting in the early 90's (check out the album credits) and decline in Bill Ham's participation it seems clear that Billy has been the driving force ever since Eliminator, with one exception. "Rhythmeen" was a significant return to the old way of recording, with the band sitting together in the studio and playing the basic song structures live. The result was arguably the greatest record since "Tejas".

So its likely a Gibbons' solo album would sound a lot like a ZZ Top album. Maybe like Mescalero. Which isn't a bad thing. But a great thing would be another record like "Rhythmeen" - something that can only happen when the band works together as a unit, all members are physically present in the studio at the same time, and all three contribute ideas and sounds.

Let's see what happens.....

Billy F. Gibbons.....Solo?

According to an article on Jungleroom.com, Billy has begun recording tracks for his first solo album. Apparently this will be a collaboration, at least in part, with Jimi Jamison. Billy has apparently layed down basic song structures with Joe Hardy, who many fans will recognize as a longtime studio engineer that has worked with ZZ.

Okay, I'm gonna come right out and say this info is extremely questionable. I have never heard of the website source, which has however apparently been around for 16 years, and don't understand why this site would have first access to a very interesting (if true) rumor. Secondly Jimi Jamison? Never heard of him until just now, and apparently he wrote the theme song to "Baywatch". Really? Why Billy would work with him I have no idea. Black Keys yes, Jimi Jamison...no.

Billy does continue to show up on other people's albums, contributing both vocals and guitar. He seemingly still has a desire to record. Maybe his bandmates aren't interested in putting forth the effort to record? Maybe they can't agree on what sound to go for? I really dont' know, but it must be something that has prevented them from having a new album for so long. I can't really see a lack of effort from the rhythm section - after all they are willing to tour the world for months at a time every year, what's wrong with a few weeks in a studio?

I certainly would be interested in a Billy solo album, but not at the expense of a ZZ Top album. We will have to keep watching this to see if anything develops.

Asleep in the Desert?

Several rumours continue to surface. Looks like ZZ will be returning to Europe in the summer, a France date has been confirmed. The euro continues to out-value the dollar, so why not? I continue to remain excited about the Australian tour - I have e-mailed several people who live there in the major cities and asked if they planning on attending any ZZ shows, so that we could hopefully get some first hand info. No one replied to me however. If anyone who reads this plans on attending one of the shows Down Under please let us know. I'll try to e-mail the contacts again as well.

I mentioned the rumor about a possible co-headlining show with Lynyrd Skynyrd in Texas but have not heard anything else. Don't know what's going on with that.

At this point any indications or mentions about the new album would be great. Can they really not be working in the studio? 2003 was eight years ago. Let's do this.

So who's going to see Kiss in Houston? .......No one?.......Yeah, me neither..... :)
