Much Ado About Stuff

Well, as is the usual developments for 2013 are already forming. An Australian tour with GnR, a European tour and a handful of US dates have already been announced. They are playing Sturgis again I believe; the show they played there in 1993 really was an amazing event. The rare songs (two of which have never been played anywhere else) and old chestnuts they broke out really were amazing. They went back a few years ago and didn't do crap. Lets hope the surprise of new songs in the set list this year repeats itself in the New Year.

As previously mentioned Billy is also playing with Moving Sidewalks in NY, and it appears a mini tour is likely. Plus he wants to work on his new solo LP. Billy has also been playing live with other bands all month. I don't understand - what did he do with his free time back when Bill Ham wouldn't let them play with anybody else.

Speaking of the old days, does anybody miss the mystery about ZZ that Ham used to encourage and enforce? I actually kind of do. Now when the band does dumb stuff it's just frustrating. Back in the day you just had to wonder and never could know the answer. Does that make sense? It was also more about the music back when Ham was in charge, now there appears to be little direction, with little purpose and no endgame. Kind of like a ship with no rudder. But I digress...

Static...Transmission

Picking up something on the Antenna from Senor Volto:

---

"I've Lost My Friends"

So ZZ Top was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame recently.  Each band member was given an award, but Dusty was the only one there from ZZ to accept an award.   My first thought was that it would have been nice to see the others there with the Dust, but BFG has been everywhere, and Frank seems to prefer to be out of the spotlight.  Maybe Dust walked out on stage, and upon realizing he was alone for the first time quoted the famous line “I've lost my friends". On second thought, maybe it’s nice to let the Dust grab center stage for a change.

Rodeo 2013

With a great new album and a recharged live setlist, ZZ top should continue to ride the wave of success into 2013.   There’s no other better way to keep it going than the play the Houston Rodeo for the second straight year.  With no facts to support this, I will predict that ZZ will play the Rodeo on Monday, 04 March.

Moving Sidewalks!!  Not just a one-off show?

Even if ZZ plays the Rodeo, the surprise reunion of the Moving Sidewalks in March 2013 proves to be a very interesting diversion.  We know all about Billy’s ever sharp musical chops, but have the others been playing?  I have to imagine they will rehearse for this show.  Also, Elwood mentioned “gigs” on his Facebook page - it was either a typo, or this won’t be the only chance to see the Sidewalks.  Stay tuned.

Sidewalks in Motion

Appears that the Moving Sidewalks will be playing their first gig in 40 some odd years. Thinking I might have to check this out...

2012 Year In Review

And what a good year it was....

2012 Highlights -

1) A new album!!! Who would have thought?! "La Futura" proved to be mostly worth the wait, with high quality ZZ sounds and spaces coming through your speakers. Make sure to get the vinyl copy, which has a more forgiving and more dynamic mastering. Gotta get the two extra tracks too, whether through Best Buy or alternative means. Only disappointment was a lack of more songs - nine years for 12 songs can be a little frustrating. But Billy has hinted there is more in the can - hopefully Rubin can maintain some semblance of normalcy and work with Billy to get these additional tracks out in some form or another.

2) A new live setlist. Thank you, thank you, thank you for dropping "Cheap Sunglasses". The additions of "Thank You", "Heaven, Hell or Houston", Vincent Price Blues", "Stages", "Beer Drinker", "25 Lighters", "Chartreuse" and "Mississippi", as well as "Thunderbird" in Europe, made this a year to remember. Let's hope more changes come into play next year. I once was, and always will be, a "Fool For Your Stockings"...

3) Interviews. Billy and Dusty made a point to speak their mind each year, and even if Billy does essentially take forever to say nothing, it's still nice to here the Boyzz speak...

4) Awards. The band received multiple accolades this year, all well deserved for what is now one of America's iconic rock bands.

2012 Lowlights -

1) Dusty's voice. No use in beating around the bush, he is having trouble. His once broad and forceful range is long gone. I know, I know, he's 63. The only person on the planet who sounds the same in his sixties as he did in his twenties is Steven Tyler. Many, like Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Bob Seger all have lost their signature instrument, but Dusty's decline is unique, both due to its late onset (the past three years or so) and its rapid pace (huge change from 2009 to 2012). It may be time for him to take a year off and focus on his health. I know he loves the road and all, but if you want to keep doing this into your seventies you gotta give yourself a break.

2) Linear drumming. As I recently commented to a fellow Top fan and friend, to each his own, it's none of my business. But taking up chain smoking again in your fifties is never a good choice if you want to have energy and stamina to partake in your lifelong passion. It's a little hard to watch, and two drum fills a night is not indicative of the skills and precision that lie within. Another reason to take a year off and focus on health.

Predictions for 2013 are not due until January. And a few shows have already been booked for next year (no Rodeo yet), but it would be good if Billy continued his relentless pursuit of weird and worked on his solo album while his fellow band mates took a well deserved 365 day sabbatical.

La Futura Part Deux?

Maybe 2013, or more likely 2014, will bring some more new tunes....

XXX = Sucks?

First thank you to those that posted their favorite ZZ albums in order. One thing that seems to hold in each case is the dismal placing of "XXX". This begs the question: is it that bad?

To view it appropriately I think we need to isolate it from its predecessor and successor. "Rhythmeen" was going to be impossible to follow, and truly featured the last great 'group' effort by the band. In contrast "Mescalero" was Billy at his most creative, unhinged and unchecked, resulting in an insanely good collection of tracks. Let's look at "XXX" on its own.

As is typical with ZZ the album opens with one of, if not the, strongest track on the album. "Poke Chop" is a great song, seriously. Inspired by Frank's suggestion, the group chose to write about a pork chop sandwich, and the song turned out to be in my opinion really strong. Better than when they choose to write about burgers....

After that, the album is indeed very hit or miss. "36-22-36" is catchy, but seems rushed and unfinished. "Fearless Boogie", which was originally created during the Rhythmeen sessions under the working title "I'm Just the Miscreant", is good but lacks something, either a stronger solo, some unique flash, a more refined chorus, something.

Which brings up "Trippin'. This is properly the worst song they have ever done, to me. The vocals sound awful, the music is muddy and buried, its just horrible. Never should have made the cut.

"Ninja Shack" on the Japanese release, despite typical non-sensical lyrics, has an electrifying gritty guitar tone and features a biting two minute outro solo.

The live tracks are not live, which I think most real fans know by now. They are however pretty good, especially "Teddy Bear" - Dusty's smooth Elvis vocals and Billy's awesome guitar work propel this song to the top three on the entire album.

Interestingly the band also recorded "live" versions of "Bang Bang" and "Dreadmonboogaloo", which I have. They are not convincing however, and "Bang Bang" is not even as good as the many real live versions that exist from the 1996-1997 and 1999-2000 tours.

My theory - Billy was pissed that RCA did not promote "Rhythmeen" and pissed that it did not sell well. The group was not really into "XXX", and this carried over to "Mescalero" (the difference being Billy was inspired during the latter). The album is rushed, poorly produced, and blemished. Even the title was given little thought. Not a high point in the bands career.

Obligatory Lists

For no other reason than it seemed pointless and boring, I never tried to formulate and make a list of my favorite ZZ Top albums, from favorite to "least favorite". But what the hell, it's my blog.

01)  Rhythmeen
02)  Mescalero
03)  Tejas
04)  Afterburner
05)  Antenna
06)  Rio Grande Mud
07)  La Futura
08)  XXX
09)  Recycler
10)  Fandango
11)  Eliminator
12)  ZZ Top's First Album
13) Tres Hombres
14) El Loco
15) Deguello

Over time "Antenna" has moved up several notches and XXX and El Loco have moved down. Other than that and the new entry of "La Futura", the order has roughly been the same for years.

La Futura correspondent review

Senor Volto offers his thoughts on "La Futura":

***

I will start by saying that I think LA FUTURA (LF) is a damn good album, and it fully meets my expectations.  It was good to read BFG’s track-by-track description about how the ten songs (excluding the bonus tracks) on the album came about, but it would have been nice to hear any morsel of information about the album from Dusty or Frank.  The music sounds really good on LF although I don’t agree with BFG about once said “a mixture of Tres Hombres and Eliminator”.  I think it’s more of a Mescalero/Rhythmeen/ Recycler/ Eliminator/XXX mashup with a couple of glances to the Pre-Eliminator stuff.  The album is more of a rock album than a blues album, but that’s OK.  I think the fans that were cast off by XXX and Mescalero will be reeled back in with this one.

Musically, Billy’s guitar is outstanding as he shows us some new tricks, as well as quoting some of his old licks.  Also, his (excellent) slide is obvious on at least four songs and is really highlighted on Chartreuse and Breakdown.  The rhythm section is equally up for the task and sounds great.  Billy’s vocals sound very good as he has settled into the same voice we hear at live shows.  Dusty’s vocals continue to be a mystery.  At a show in May of this year, Dusty’s voice was way down in the mix on several songs, which seems to agree with how his voice is mixed on LF.  But then he rips it up on Drive By Lover.  The first four tracks (Texicali) are crammed full of stuff – guitars, overdubs and sound effects.  Maybe this was Rubin’s doing.  But the rest of the album has some “space” – one song has just one guitar track – that allows the band to breathe and play more as a trio.  It’s also cool how some of the songs have rough “jam style” endings (Lose, Lose You for example).  That said, I’m sure ZZ can blast away on any of these 12 tracks live.  Let’s hope 2013 has some more LF songs!

We heard leading up to the release that the band started with loads of CDs full of musical thoughts, which makes one think about the selection of songs on LF.  Were those the best 10 (or 12) songs?  We heard Dusty sing Future Blues again last year (sounded great), and it was said to be one of the working tracks for LF.  How come no Dusty lead vocal on the original 10 songs?  There were also teases of other tunes (Mexican?) that weren’t on LF.   Last comment - LA FUTURA is very good, but it won’t knock Rhythmeen out of my top spot.

I have made it a point not to read too many reviews, but I think the general fan response for LF is pretty good.  So, here are my track-by-track thoughts:

  1. I Gotsta Get Paid – Great opening number – sets the tone for the rest of the album.  Nice strong backup vocals from Dusty.  Overdubs galore.  Approved by the H-Town Hip-Hop crew.  ‘Nuff said!  Score = 10.

  1. Chartreuse – Keepin’ the pedal to the metal with this one.  The only blues shuffle beat on the album.  The song works great and features the best slide guitar on the original 10 tracks.  Score = 9.5.

  1. Consumption –Good song, but one point deduction because of its place in the track order.  Sounds too close to Chartreuse, but with a straight four beat, and is saved by some more nice slide work. Score = 8.5.

  1. Over You – This one has grown on me.  I like the “uplifting” chords at the end.  However, I think the song could do without the string synth – maybe a pedal steel, violin, mandolin (or nothing) instead.  Score = 9.

  1. Heartache in Blue – Chang Chang, it’s just the thang.  Has that “What’s Up With That” killer vibe.  This song would sound great even without the super harp (once again by James Harman).  Fuzzy guitar solo with phrasing that would make Albert Collins proud.  Score = 10.

  1. I Don’t Wanna Lose, Lose You – My personal favorite.  Straight-ahead rocker with a pounding rhythm section featuring Frank’s sledgehammer snare.  Two very tasty eight bar guitar solos.  Try to get this one out of your head!  Another one that could easily be done live (2013?).  Score = 10

  1. Flyin’ High – This one is controversial. The original version (that I prefer) sounds a lot more like ZZ than the one on the album.  The opening chords on the LF version sound just like AC/DC or even Journey.  That said, the LF version could easily be a big-hit crossover on country or pop radio stations.  Score = 7.5.

  1. It’s Too Easy Manana – Change of pace.  The first solo is a spacey delay-drenched twisting riff that would be right at home on a Pink Floyd song.  Would have liked the delay on the second solo as well. The “left turn” outro that says “Decision or Collision” to me, but I can’t help but wondering what the rest of that jam sounded like.  Score = 9.

  1. Big Shiny Nine – The double (or triple) entendre song.  Nuts and bolts – Smith, Wesson and Colts – great line!  Nice guitar fills and solos.  Again would like to hear more of the outro.  Score = 9.

  1. Have A Little Mercy – Kind of a letdown as the final (original) track.  The song just kind of fizzles out at the end.  Score = 8.5
Score = 91/100, Grade = A-

Extra Credit (Bonus Tracks)

  1. Threshold Of A Breakdown – Really good straight-up rocker song featuring the best slide work of all the tracks.  The rhythm guitar sounds like it was lifted from XXX.  Score = 10

  1. Drive By Lover – Cha Cha Cha!  Finally, a lead vocal from the Dust!  More screaming guitar from BFG.  The last note is an exclamation point providing a much stronger ending to the album than “Mercy”.  Score = 10

Side Note – either of the bonus tracks would have been right at home on XXX.

Final Score 93 (111/120), Grade = A

The Ballad (of Sir Frankie Crisp)

So, "Over You"....

I like it. I do. Some people don't. Let's talk about it....

To me it represents the third ballad in ZZ's history, following "Leila" and "Rough Boy". To me "Breakaway" is neither blues nor a ballad, but that's another topic for discussion.

"Leila" is hit or miss. It is uncharacteristic of the Top, and likely does not suit the majority of fans' tastes. But can we criticize a band for an eccentric song when at the same time we praise the band for not sticking to a formula and their incessant willingness to try different genres?

"Rough Boy" is the best of the three in my opinion. Whether you opine that "Afterburner" sounds dated and metallic is a moot point. This song fit perfectly in the mid 1980's music scene, and the band made a concentrated effort to prove that first they could write such a song and secondly make it a damn good one. Like Dusty once said, they didn't lose any longtime fans when the ballad reached the airwaves, but they gained a lot of new ones, especially women, which ain't a bad thing.

"Over You" is somewhere in between. The lyrics are simple like "Rough Boy" and Billy's gravel road voice fits the context perfectly. What the song lacks are the slick, smooth, effortless guitar licks that, especially in the outro, made "Rough Boy" such an amazingly proficient number. Billy's ability to pull out the absolute best solo, the only solo, that could ever fit "Rough Boy" was proof the band, even under intense pressure, could rise to the occasion and do no wrong during that 1981 to 1987 period. "Over You" seems to lack the focus, drive and concentrated guitar work that is essential to projecting that ZZ "sound". Jeff Beck commented that Billy is the greatest at knowing when it is better to NOT play a note rather than to, but in this instance additional takes and trial and error could have proved beneficial and elevated a good song to a great song. Isn't It a Pity....

MTV: Miscellaneous Video Television

The music video for "25 Lighters" has finally appeared and can be seen here:

http://www.vevo.com/watch/zz-top/i-gotsta-get-paid/USUV71201019#/watch/zz-top/i-gotsta-get-paid/USUV71201019

Pretty cool. Usual but fail-safe formula of cars, guitars and pretty girls. Wisely the band appears to be releasing promotional material incrementally - to try to squeeze out as much hype and momentum as possible. Music videos across the board aren't much different from ZZ's - make it flashy, make it slick, and make them perky.

-----

"Chartreuse" debuted in the live set in Columbia, MD at FreeFest, taking the place of stages. It how has been moved to the show opener, coming in prior to "Thank You". This is the first song where all three members share writing credits to be debuted since 2000. "Piece" and "Buck Nekkid" where Gibbons compositions.

For the first time in many years the band has shown some flexibility and spontaneity in the set list. This is very welcomed indeed. Capping this great trend would be one more song from Futura (maybe "Lose Lose You"?) and an old Dusty chestnut. Come on "Teddy Bear"...

-----

The vinyl edition of "La Futura" has again been delayed, now scheduled for release in the U.S. on 10/22/12 (which may again be moved since this is a Monday and U.S. releases typically come out on Tuesdays). No additional word regarding bonus tracks. Fingers crossed....

-----

I intended to do a large "La Futura" review, but its highly likely that fans have read enough reviews in the press to get a gauge of mass opinion. I am looking forward to some reviews from readers (Volto?) but in the interest of getting to the point I will make this brief:

Hits:
"Gotsta" - Full tilt Billy imagination and creation.
"Consumption" - Awesome.
"Over You" - I may be in the minority, but this song is a fitting obligatory one track blues.
"Heartache" - harp and Dusty - perfect.
"Lose Lose You"- upbeat, group sounds like their 30 years younger.
"Threshold" - non-mainstream song that allows Billy to branch out.
"Drive-By" - Dusty dials in Elvis, just right every time.

In-betweens:
"Chartreuse" - good jam, missing something.
"It's Too Easy Manana" - good, but would rather have a song written by the three members than a cover
"Big Shiny Nine" - vocals are buried, solo and outro are too short. Song deserved more thought and time.

Misses:
"Flyin High" - AC/DC, ZZ Top, whatever....this song is too straightforward for its own good. A missed opportunity.

"The Future"....and Beyond!

ZZ gets back on the road tonight, appearing at the Chicago Theater in Chicago, Illinois. Hopes are high for a set list change - mostly a couple more additions from "La Futura" would be good - since that is the name of the tour and all.

Also "Driving While Blind" - but I'm dreaming now....

I will post a set list as soon as I can.

-----

"La Futura" debuted on the charts in the U.S. at number six - highest ever. They also moved 30K copies in the first week, the most albums they have sold since during the first few weeks of "Antenna". Great to see this.

-----

It has been discussed and agreed that if ZZ does put out another album, it likely will not be produced by Rubin. It has also been discussed that the "Texicali" songs seemed more polished and 'finished' than the remaining six (or eight) tracks. Perhaps Rubin's seemingly OCD production approach got to be too much for Billy, and the band decided it would be released in September come hell or high water. Who knows....

-----

Amazon shows the vinyl release date to be October 9th.
Best Buy shows the vinyl release date to be October 16th.

Which one is right? Does Best Buy have another exclusive version in the works? If you have any info please comment accordingly.

------

Thanks go out to the readers. I greatly enjoyed reading everyone's comments on the recent posts and rest assured I read every one, even if I do not get a chance to comment back. Please continue to participate in discussion if the mood strikes you!

-----

If we see another ZZ Top release of new music, will it be called "ZZ Top's Last Album"??

-----

Anybody know what Bill Ham is up to? Bill, if you ever read this page, know that the fans will always respect and appreciate your countless contributions and leadership towards that "Little Ol' Band from Texas".

Bubba's Country Store

I present good friend and ZZ fanatic Rebzz's account of his trip to Bubba's Country Store, scene of the Jeremiah Weed / ZZ Top commercial. Enjoy....

-----

First of all, Austin is a very cool town. I decided to mapquest Buuba's today and to my amazement it was only 15 minutes from my hotel! I took to the road today and found the store very easily. It is south of Austin but not too far out. As I was turning in the parking lot a guy was filling up his car and I asked him to snap a pic of me with my iPad in front of the store. He most graciously obliged. I then made my way into the store and it is just what you would expect a southern country store would be- candy bars on the left and bread and other necessities on the right. The lady behind the counter immediately thought I was lost by the look on my face as I slowly eased in the door. She was very nice! I told her I was a ZZ Top fan and wanted the full story of the video shoot. She was actually there during the entire process.

She took me on into the back part of the store where wine and beer are sold. She said the store shut down for 4 days while the set was constructed.. You will see a a pic of me in front of the wine standing in the exact spot where the band was set up in the video. A fake wall had been built to look like a cooler but it is no longer there. She said that none of the customers were aware of the set up at all. They were all real customers with no idea what was going on. The customers made anywhere from $300 to $4000.00 for being in the video.. After they signed releases they were told that they would be paid based upon the type of reaction and participation. Of course they didn't know this until after they opened the cooler. It took 4 days to complete the video. The band was there for 2 days.

Tennessee ZZ Top show review

At late notice I decided to head Over the Hills and Far Away yesterday to see the ZZ in northeastern Tennessee. Opening act took the stage at 7:00 pm....

Dive right in -

- Cadillac Black opened. These guys are hardcore. Long haired pencil necked blue collar sleeveless plaid wearin' 20' somethings. They were actually louder than ZZ. Just three guys....one on keyboards and bass pedals. But they rocked. Seriously rocked. My ears were bleeding but I assumed that was normal. Full of raw energy and very hungry, these guys are pure bred "don't give a damn don't tread on me" stock. Youtube and their albums don't seem to do them justice. Got to see them live....
- Skynyrd sucked. Van Zant's vocals were flat, he must have said Tennessee at least 20 times, patronizing crap. They know the formula and they work it hard. They did play two songs from the new album, which is more than I can say for ZZ. But again it was played out. They over dramatize and are struck in the '70's. ZZ looks like their from the 2000's, Skynyrd doesn't. And Rossington looks like Satan with white hair. D-
- ZZ. At this point the crowd had been drinking for almost three hours. Beer was everywhere. And with nobody checking your bags at the door there were liquor bottles, airplane bottles, and suspicious looking bottles everywhere. The crowd was young, probably a median age of 40 - half below and half above. The younger crowd were busy hot boxing cigarates and trying to suck each other's tongues out of their owners' mouth, in between screaming, pushing and yelling at each other of course. Personally the taste of cigraettes never did it for me, but hormones dull your taste buds I suppose. If you have asthma do not go to concerts in TN, you will pass out. Anyway the beer didn't stop, even though ZZ probably only had 75 minutes of playing to go. They seemed to sense the energy and kept it fired up, with little chit chat between tunes and exaggrated manerisms on stage. Dusty had a problem with his ponytail during "Bus", he walked over to a technician (not Pablo, I didn't see him once, saw Elwood of course) and had his hair did. He then walked back over to Billy, tapped him on the shoulder and shouted "I'm back", then they did some non-Paula Abdul chorographed dance moves. At this point some fans started to pass out, and you had to watch your step for fear of stepping in beer or messing up someone's mullet. Billy advised Elwood there would be no "Vincent Price Blues" - not for this crowd, they weren't in the mood.
- Billy actually plugged "La Futura", advising the crowd during the introduction to "Gotsta Get Paid". As soon as Billy started the chords the crowd cheered - they know this one and they like it. This is the new "Mississippi", this is the new "Pincushion". The first radio friendly rock friendly single they have had in 18 years. Saw La Futura debuted at number 7 on the Billboard charts this past week - the highest on the chart they have been since "Antenna", maybe even "Recycler".
- No "La Futura" shirts for sale. Dumb.
- Tube Snake, La Grange and Tush rounded it out. Based on how much people were struggling to walk up the stairs I decided to literally run to my car, take a right from the parking lot (instead of a left onto the interstate) and ride a TN 2 lane rural highway under the cover of a cloudy dark sky.....scanning the local radio stations I came upon "Sleeping Bag".....that don't happen every day....

Beacon / La Futura review / Things to Come

Well, the La Futura "coming out party" was last night at the Beacon in New York. Reports are in - ZZ put on a great and energetic show but failed to play any new material aside from "Gotsta Get Paid".
??????
??????
??????
Chartreuse has been played during soundchecks. They have rehearsed the song but apparently not enough. It is absolutely imperative that ZZ capitalize on the current mometum of good vibes, the good sales and good reviews, and play these new songs. People dig this album, people want to hear these new songs.
PLAY SOME OF THE NEW SONGS DAMMIT!!!

P.S. Thanks to my friend Clay G. for his detailed analysis of last night's show.

------

I plan on posting a full review of the album in the next few weeks or so. I think it's important to have a decent amount of time to soak up and notice all the nuiances that make ZZ Top songs unique. I want to have a chance to listen some more before I make my final call.

I also anticipate Senor Volto will be posting his album review in the near future. We'll see where we agree and disagree.

-----

Never fear, there is more to write about in the world of ZZ Top beyond "La Futura".
Coming soon:
1) An indepth story of one reader's adventure to Bubba's Country Store, scene of the Jeremiah Weed / ZZ Top commercial. Thanks to good buddy Rebzz for this one.
2) A look into the highly suspect "autographed" posters received as part of the VIP ticket package. At this time all I can say is BUYER BEWARE.'
3) Continuing coverage of ZZ's fall live tour in support of "La Futura"
4) A write up on the chops and changes within ZZ from the time Mescalero was released to the present.
5) Some more stuff I come up with.....

Initial Thoughts on "La Futura"

-Heartache in Blue - fantastic, simply awesome. Love the riff, love the harp, love the sound, love Dusty's contribution. Hell yes.

- I Don't Wanna Lose Lose You - pretty good, somewhat linear but so is the entire album.

- Flyin High - prefer the original version, this one is trying too hard to be unadventerous and lacks Billy's flare and touch. A rare miss.

- It's Too Easy Manana - already perhaps within the top five of my favorite Billy solos of all time. Love the mood

- Big Shiny Nine - again rather straightforward - which is not a bad thing when its ZZ, but again a conservative approach

- Have a Little Mercy - great laidback melody and southern blues with just a hint of country. Great vocals.
It would appear that the meaning of "going back to their roots" entails removing Billy's eccentric and experimental studio approach to songs. Billy would take a basic track and throw in all kinds of sounds and beats, starting with the Antenna album and progressing to perhaps what may prove to be his artistic peak, the masterpiece that is Mescalero. I can see where the sounds on "La Futura" were laid down and instead of Billy leading the full helm and layering sounds during production, Rubin kept it simple and reinforced a hard rock sound.
It is perhaps no surprise that "I Gotsta Get Paid", arguably the best song of the ten, is a tune which Rubin had never heard of before, Billy fully conceived, and features the most diverse and experimental sounds of the entire album. Maybe the producer mix should have been 70% Billy , 30% Rubin?
Notwithstanding the above, overall I find this to be a fantastic and most exciting new album from the Top. No doubt it will fit the mold of and interest the average rock fan, both old and young, and should prove to sell very well.
Finally it has arrived, and finally fans the world over can tune in and rejoice in the continuing evolution of the world's longest running band, the world's greatest band, the ZZ Tops.

Song previews available on iTunes

Blues You Can Use!

Ladies and Gentleman, the ever clairvoyant Senor Volto!:

Billy is on the cover of the new (October 2012) issue of Guitar World with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. They’re called “Blues Brothers”.  This was unexpected as he was featured in the January 2012 issue as Santa Claus (Wreck the Halls).  There are lots of pix of Billy and Dan showing off several unique guitars.  My favorite is Billy’s Dixie Beer single pickup Gibson on the cover.

There’s lots of namedropping about blues greats (Hound Dog Taylor!).  Billy and Dan share a lot of common ground – I won’t spoil the article here.  Dan and Billy do disagree about the awesomeness of British Blues players (Billy for, Dan against).  There’s also a nice sidebar about Billy and Dan’s love for Lightning Hopkins.

And, the issue has an excerpt from Buddy Guy’s upcoming autobiography “When I Left Home” about his introduction to Chicago Blues.  The excerpt shows how Buddy met greats Otis Rush and “The Mud”, Muddy Waters.  Can’t wait to read that book!

A full guitar tabs with playing hints for Top’s Waitin’ for The Bus and Buddy Guy’s Damn Right I’ve Got the Blues are included.

Get this issue, you won’t be sorry!

Crystal Ball

Look for ZZ to perform on the David Letterman Show sometime around mid September.

-----

Look for an article of unknown length, on the band and "La Futura", to premiere in Rolling Stone, either print or online, in the next few weeks.

Through the Forests and the Pines...

ZZ returned to playing U.S. soil last night, playing in California.

Anybody happen to catch the setlist? I haven't seen it anywhere yet...

-----

Nothing new on the "La Futura" front, other than the fact that I'm sure I'm not the only one counting down the days. 27 to go.

-----

ZZ has set a new show for October in San Antonio, but it appears to be with the "Gang of Outlawz". I hope they add Dallas and Houston and do some solo shows without the other two bands.

Sans ZZ: "Electronic Tonic"

I have not commented much on Billy's quietly touted solo project "Electronic Tonic" (which is a working title I assume). He indicated it was out there...and he's right.

I have heard a sampling of a song that, while it may not make the album, is likely an indication of where Billy is heading. It is an electronic tour de force, with moderately auto tuned vocals, beatbox synthesizer drums, keyboards, and other electronica touches. It is indeed different, but the little bit I have heard sounds awesome! Billy is unique, among a select few that artistically continue to change, rearrange, innovate and create, even after being in the game for 45+ years. This album may not win over all ZZ fans, but it's not meant to. It is what Billy wants to do, and I am guessing that he will gain some new followers based on this new direction.

Let's hope after the imminent success of "La Futura" and supporting tour that Billy hunkers down and puts his full effort and imagination into this very exciting project.

If you have an open mind, you will like what you hear...

Another positive review

"La Futura" update 1.1

News from the States:

http://www.cnbc.com/id/48464047

Only unfortunate thing appears to be the band's decision to limit the LP to 10 tracks. "Future Blues", "I Wish I Was Born a Mexican", among others, do not appear to have made the cut.

Billy's solo venture also appears to be very exciting.

Rambling Thoughts

Appears that "Nationwide" may have replaced "Heaven..." in the set list. Let's hope not - there are people in Europe still that want to hear this rare tune, as well as in the US when the group returns later in the summer.

-----

Appears Dusty's vocal issues, while a little improved, are still struggling somewhat during the European jaunt. I certainly recognize the vocal cords age, but there must be a way to bring him up in the mix. Perhaps it wants to be somewhat muted, I don't know....

-----

With regard to correspondence:

Great article on the group [in the new issue of Classic Rock Magazine]. I appreciate the effort behind documenting the reasons for the nine year gap. Interesting that Billy went vulnerable and admitted that XXX and Mescalero did not sell, that the band's reputation had diminished, and that he wanted the band to return to prominence. Also interesting that the band admits XXX and Mescalero were not group efforts - I've said it before Mes is a Billy solo album. I wonder why they didn't record like Rhythmeen again? I think Frank just likes to play and maybe doesn't speak up, and I think Dusty is either underappreciated or intimidated in the studio.
I am excited to hear some of Billy's solo stuff, especially if Rubin works with him on it. I hope Rubin doesn't cause the big delays however - it doesn't need to have the same polish as a ZZ album. I predict something like this could come out in 2014 or 2015 - likely a year the band would take off from the road.
I predict next year will be another year of touring, hopefully in support of "La Futura".

-----

It has been lightly rumored that ZZ would do a special show in Houston towards the end of the year. Anybody else heard anything about this potentially awesome possibility?

Highlights and Lowlights of the 2012 Tour - Part One

2012 Tour - Part I

Highlights:
1) Rare tunes!!! The additions of "Vincent", "Stages" and "Houston" are fantastic! Excellent to hear these rarely played gems and in the case of "Houston", a brand new and most obscure chestnut.
2) Elimination of tired tunes!!! No "Sunglasses", no "Nationwide, no "Pressure"! Finally, a band that has been together over 40 years has learned that they have written more than these three songs.
3) New video. Brand new footage shot for the vast majority of songs, with an extensive opening sequence properly setting the mood for the good time to follow.
4) Billy's vocals. They have continued to deepen and increase in raspy tones that it now sounds almost perfect, like they finally moved down a full octave back into proper key. His singing is bluesy and fitting of each tune, both live and on Texicali.
5) No trilogy sequence. Moving "Gimme" to a spot earlier in the set list is a simple, yet extremely refreshing and exciting change.

Lowlights:
1) No Texicali songs. So far. All signs point to yes when asking the question "will they play some new tunes in Europe this summer?" The rare tunes made up for this glaring omission, but upon their return to North America in the fall and the scheduled impending release date of the new album, to not play any of the new stuff would be criminally insane.
2) Dusty's vocals. This is a touchy subject. Dusty is giving it is all, like he always has, and his bass playing continues to be tone, taste and tenacious. But the sound crew is mishandling his singing - he either needs to be brought up in the mix, or needs to accept the aging of his voice and sing in a lower register.
3) Encores. They broke up the trilogy, now break up Grange>Tush. Close the main set with "Grange" - then play:  new song > "Viva" > "Tush". Or something like that. Just make the encore more unpredictable. Maybe mix it up amongst three or four songs from night to night. Keep it exciting, both for the band and the audience.

When in Europe I Gotsta Get Paid

So, if you read between the lines in the below linked article, it appears that 20 minutes of backline video footage will be added at the start of the European tour. Having disclosed the fact that footage was recorded for Texicali, it appears that the additional time will be dedicated to at least one or two of the new tracks. This is good news as many are frustrated at the lack of promotion coming from the band in support of an EP that is overwhelmingly deemed to be fantastic by the masses.

Low Down in the Street

An extensive update to cover all the happenings and events on the "street":

-----

First up, here is a link to a most recent and very interesting interview article with BFG. He comments on the new album release date, working with Rubin, and what would happen if ZZ ever broke up.

http://theadvocate.com/utility/homepagestories/3108745-129/zz-top-prepping-for-release

-----

"Flyin High" version 2.0 made its debut at the Hollywood, FL 2012-06-12 show, during the pre-show PA music. It is said to contain an even more streamlined pop beat (not sure how that is possible) with new vocals. Impressions have been positive. I have not heard it so I cannot comment. It may be fruitful to check YouTube to see if anyone picked up a recording of it - somewhat unlikely though as most people only record the main show.

-----

Billy has branched out on his own as "Billy Gibbons and Co." to record a tribute track on the Fleetwood Mac compilation "Just Tell Me That You Want Me". Along with Blake Mills and Matt Sweeney he digs into a very riff heavy version of "Oh Well" with Billy's subdued and now common gruff vocals. Sounds great. This would never have happened with Bill Ham at the helm.

"Oh Well" can be heard here:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/song-premiere-billy-gibbons-and-co-oh-well-20120621

-----

The "Meet and Greet" continues to devolve. In the earlier days (1980's) it served as a vehicle for ZZ to keep a connection and relationship with their fans, in the face of rapidly increasing fame and popularity. Today however there are many rules - no personal items can be presented to the band to autograph, no conversations with the group, no more than one photos, and now no handshake. Appears that the lines are being instructed that at a recent show a fan was a bit overzealous and shook hands a little to aggressively, putting the next show in jeopardy. A handshake is not a big deal but the argument can be made both ways - a fan doesn't have to shake hands with the band but then again its not hard for the band to add a small personal touch and a respectful recognition that the fan spent a large sum of money to meet his or her favorite group.

Taking the amount of money the Meet and Greet costs and combining it with the ever increasing rules and insulting nature of the event, I'm gonna go on record and say in my opinion its not worth it. It's offensive to have to pay money to not even be allowed to exchange small talk with the group. Milking fans for extra coin is not a way to endear yourself to your following, both newbies and die-hards alike.

But...some people really enjoy the Meet and Greet, which is cool, to each their own. Whatever floats your boat.

-----

John I. attended the Nashville show. Here is his report along with some fantastic photos:

There is really nothing earth shattering to report from last night's show. It was exactly the same set list as the ones you guys attended. BFG didn't bring out the Melody Maker guitar. The only thing of note was the camo bass that Dusty surprised BFG with during the encore. There was no album signed from the audience. Started at 9:55 and ended at 11:10. It was a great show. I personally think that most of the crowd had never heard "Vincent Price Blue" or "Heaven Hell or Houston". Out of the 8-9k that were there I would bet me and 3 more know those tunes. Some of the crowd were screaming for "Just Got Paid" and"Pressure".

-----

Also courtesy of John I. is a link to a very interestng audio interview regarding the 1973 classic "Tres Hombres". Check it out:

http://www.inthestudio.net/online-only-interviews/zz-top-tres-hombres-pt3/

-----

Road reports continue to come in detailing a revitalized and energetic Top. It is most pleasing that the band has stuck with the rarities rather than trading them in for generic "Sunglasses" and "Nationwide". First hand accounts indicate the crowds are enjoying the rarities, no doubt due to the band's aggressive, professional and bombastic take on them. As I said before this is a great year to see the group if you have avoided the last few tours due to the staleness that had taken hold. Viva ZZ Top!!

-----

"I Gotsta Get Paid" and other new songs have not made it into the set list. Current theory is that the single will be brought into the rotation when they head over to Europe and are no longer sharing the bill with other bands. Let's hope so - the group really needs to promote the new album to get the word out and receive the appreciation and respect this new album deserves.

-----

A number of rumors and hints about the new album can be complied from those in the know. Here is what's circulating:

- Extensive revision has been taking place and continues on a number of previously thought finalized tracks
- At one time to feature 10 songs, it now will likely hold 12 - 14 tracks
- In addition to Dusty's cover of "Future Blues" he will have lead vocals on another tune
- The entire album was set to be called "Texicali" but in light of the EP with the same name this could
potentially cause problems, thus a new name is being
considered
- "Chartruese" is the first song in my knowledge to have songwriting credits of "Gibbons/Beard". To
this end Hill and Beard are supposed to be more involved in the writing of the songs - see Mescalero
for how much Gibbons had taken over. Ultimately songwriting credits across the album will include
about 10 people as contributors.
- Release date is set to be late early October - unfortunate that they cannot strike when
the iron is hot. If the album is not released by the end of November, don't look for it until Spring
2013.

Photo shot

Many may have seen Dusty's facebook entry recently indicating they had a photo shot with famous rock photographer Ross Halfin. More info regarding the event can be found on Ross' website.

Halfin had this to say:

"A day at Aperture Studios Miami shooting ZZ Top for various things. It was a creative day and they were so easy".

Photos of Billy at the band's Hollywood FL performance can be found as well. Even with the watermarks, Ross is overly protective of his shots - don't bother trying to right click anything. If he doesn't make any money you're not going to be allowed to enjoy it...

Gotsta Get Paid on the Radio / BFG’s Road Reports

Senor Volto, coming at you today:

I just heard Gotsta Get Paid on the radio today on Sirius XM Outlaw Country.  Although I’ve listened to the song lots of times already, it was really cool hearing new ZZ Top on the radio!

If you have Sirius XM, be sure to check out BFG’s Road Reports on Sirius XM’s Outlaw Country.  The Report tonight was a quick blurb about where they are playing (St. Augustine, FL) followed by a plug for the “4 song digital download from the upcoming album Texicali”.  So maybe that’s the name of the full album?

More info at: http://www.siriusxm.com/OUTLAWCOUNTRY

Schedule of Road Reports:

Billy F. Gibbons “Gang of Outlaws” Road Reports 6 pm ET on Fri. 6/1, Tue. 6/5, Wed. 6/6, Fri. 6/8, Tue. 6/12, Fri. 6/15, Tue. 6/19, Wed. 6/20, Fri. 6/22, Tue. 6/26, Wed. 6/27 Fri. & 6/29 Rock & Roll Hall of Famers ZZ Top are currently headlining the “Gang of Outlaws” tour with Three Doors Down and Gretchen Wilson, and the band’s legendary guitarist Billy F. Gibbons will be providing “Road Reports” prior to each show exclusively in Outlaw Country. (5 min).

New Music Video???

Pretty solid rumors indicate the band may have recorded a music video to support the new single "I Gotsta Get Paid". It was available on Youtube yesterday for about 20 minutes before it was removed by the owner. Nothing too extravagant, mostly the band playing and singing in front of basic backgrounds. Keep an eye out.

06/05/12 Richmond, VA Show Review

Setlist:

- Thank You
- Bus
- Chicago
- Pincushion
- X
- Gimme
- Vincent Price
- Heaven, Hell or Houston
- My Head's in Mississippi
- Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers
- Stages
- Sharp Dressed
- Legs
Encore:
- La Grange (with Sloppy and BarBQue)
- Tush

Random thoughts somewhat composing a paragraph review:

Missed opener Gretchen Wilson...Three Doors Down is talented but not my cup of tea...ZZ came on at 8:50 PM...unseasonably cold weather, low 60's (F), usually low 70's (F) at night...Outdoor venue, filled to the maximum, likely 10,000 or so in attendance, great to see...Wide range of ages in the audience, very enthusiastic...Band's tour buses were parked beside the left side of the venue, Dusty's trailer in plain sight behind his impressive means of transportation...Gang of Outlaws intro theme, pretty cool, went over well with the crowd...Opened with Thank You, crowd loved it, Dusty's vocals too low in the mix ( a complaint throughout the show)...Straight into Bus/Chicago, Dusty's bass very loud and prominent,  a good thing...Billy missed quite a few notes / bad chords / late chord changes, but only on the first few songs, after Chicago he improved (significantly)...Pincushion, ever a part of their arsenal, sounded good and featured a confident outro solo from BFG...X was cool to hear again, crowd recognized it right away and sang along...Gimme in an unusual position, very nice to hear this outside of the other Eliminator hits...Vincent Price, simply fantastic, extremely cool and dynamic solo from Billy - almost thrashing in nature - quick leads interlaced with power chords - highlight of the night, crowd more or less did not know what song it was but were very happy with the end result as noted by the applause...Heaven, Hell or Houston, great to hear as a dedicated ZZ fan, great boogie solo from Billy and awesome vocals true to the El Loco sound...Mississippi - finally played in it's entirety, great extended solo and powerful drumming from Frank...Beer Drinkers was confident in its swagger and the band obviously enjoyed jamming to it, audience banged their heads up and down in a sign of approval...Stages surprisingly was greatly appreciated by the fans both young and old, young kid beside me was playing air guitar the whole time, many have questioned this being included in the show but it is played very well...Sharp again had a strong solo from Billy...Legs unremarkable...as usual very short encore wait, maybe 2 minutes...Customary La Grange but Sloppy and BarBQue was great to hear again...Customary Tush, Dusty sounded good but still too low in the mix......

Highlights:
- After getting warmed up Billy really came alive. Some of the best playing I have heard from him in a long time. Awesome. Vincent Price, Vincent Price, Vincent Price...
- Dusty's vocals need to brought up, appears he can still sing well so why not let the fans hear him?
- Set list is a welcomed refreshing change. If you have not seen the band in a few years go this year
- Billy was making Elwood work at the beginning, motioning to him and speaking to him during songs multiple times
- Frank was steady as ever, pounding away and keeping the beat
- Pablo failed to catch the pint of liquor which crashed to the stage floor, but failed to break. Strange...
- Dusty, during the middle part of the set, hung out close to the drum riser, grooving away
- Set list needs another Dusty song
- Frank's dog made his appearance during the band bow

*** Texicali ***
I Don't Understand...
...Why no mention, absolutely no mention, of Texicali was made. No physical EP available for sale, no new songs played, no mention from Billy about the release. Why not? This was the same day the EP came out. The fans were soaking up every moment of the band's performance and were putty in the band's hands, why not push the new songs, they could have sold out of copies at the show and many more would visit iTunes when they got home.
This makes no sense. I am not a publicist and don't claim to be, but to me not promoting your new work is crazy.

Overall:

Great show, fantastic playing from Billy, band is having a great time, set list is nice in its changes.
Go see them this tour if you can.

Texicali / Richmond, VA 06/05/12; Chartreuse

Texicali is set for release tomorrow. Some are concerned, with good reason, that the songs will only be available through iTunes in the U.S. I must admit there is a little too much mystery regarding how to obtain the EP and not enough info pointing fans in the right direction. The release however states Texicali will be available through all digital music outlets, so I would guess this includes sites like Amazon.com and the like. I will post if I find anything beneficial and ask that readers do the same.

---

I will be attending tomorrow night's show in Richmond, VA. Will try to post the set list when I get home late in the evening but a full review will likely not follow until a few days later.

---

I'm sure most are aware that "Chartreuse" is available for listening through Rollingstone.com
"Over You" however is no where to be found...

"Consumption" available online; "Flyin' High" rework; Billy in Nashville (full report)

As Korken pointed out (thank you!) ZZ's new song "Consumption" is available online. It will be part of the EP "Texicali" coming out on Tuesday June 5th.
Initial listen shows this to be a dirty blues with Billy's traditional raspy growl glossing over the also traditionally weak lyrics. Listening to it loud helps bring out the song and the sound.
Looking forward to "Texicali" more and more.

Apparently Rubin has requested, or did request, an extensive rework of "Flyin' High", complete with new / additional lyrics and rerecorded vocals. Look for the song to make the album but sound quite different from the version released over a year ago.

Billy was in Nashville Wednesday night to take part in a Joe Walsh special. Here is a full report from Rebzz, who was lucky enough to be selected to participate as an audience member. Thank you Rebzz!!!

" I attended the Joe Walsh & Friends CMT CROSSROADS taping last night in Nashville. It was an unreal experience. The venue was The Factory in Franklin, TN. There were about 200 people that were chosen to be a part of the balcony audience and I was lucky enough to win a spot. There were approximately 200 more people who were seated on the floor. These were mostly record company execs w/friends and other influential people in the Nashville music scene. Kix Brooks and his wife were in the 2nd row on the floor.

It was a great experience as I had never been a part of any TV taping. We were told to show a lot of energy while taping(clapping etc.) We were warned that we could be replaced at any time if we were were just standing and not showing emotion. I arrived early and was able to secure a good spot once they let us in the door. The balcony was directly behind the stage and wrapped around in one direction. I was behind the stage looking directly down on the performers. The evening started out with Joe Walsh performing the title track to his new album "Analog Man" which is due out June 5. It was a great song with a definite Eagles/70s classic rock feel.

The first performer Walsh brought out was Brad Paisley and they did a great job on "Rocky Mountain Way". Next up was a new young country performer Hunter Hayes and he and Walsh performed a classic Eagles hit, "In the City". Next was another new country performer Luke Bryan and he and Walsh performed "Life's Ben Good" very well. Fourth up to bat was Sara Evans(Beauuuuuttttifulll) and she and Walsh performed a great Eagles classic, "Best Of My Love". All of the aforementioned except for Brad Paisley did their songs twice. Paisley got his on the first take.

Now for the finale. Joe Walsh said(and I will paraphrase but I think I'm very close) "When I decided to do this show I told CMT that I wanted a CLOSER! I can't think of anyone any better than the King of Tone, Mr. Billy Gibbons!" BFG walked out decked out in his traditional black jacket and slacks with white shirt. On the back of the jacket was the new Texicali logo . Underneath the log was BFG in block letters with TEXICALI underneath. He was sharp dressed man. They immediately ripped into "Life In The Fast Lane". I like the song but I thought they might have done "Funk 49". The beat of "Life In The Fast Lane" is much faster and different than ZZ Top material. The teleprompter was not on cue so Billy in his professional way decided to just do his thang I think during the song. He absolutely nailed it and it couldn't have been in any better.

It was a night to remember. They were VERY strict about pictures and recording. Attached is a very rough and blurred picture of myself taken by Iphone. This was taken at the end of the show before we walked out of the door. Joe Walsh stuck around and played one more song from his new album and ended with "Funk 49". This show titled "Joe Walsh and Friends" will air on 6/23 at 11 pm eastern time on CMT."

Confirmed: ZZ Top on iTunes, four new songs

Confirmed!!

ZZ will release four songs from the upcoming album on iTunes. This will take place on 2012-06-05.

*******

"Tuesday, June 5, will see the release of Texicali, a four track digital collection from ZZ Top that offers the first new studio recordings from “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” in nine years. The four new songs, available from iTunes and all digital retail outlets, offer a preview of the group’s full-length album, as yet untitled, that will be released on American Recordings late this summer or early fall.

...All four tracks will be previewed through an audio stream at Rollingstone.com for one day only, Monday, June 4.

These four tracks that comprise Texicali, like the forthcoming album, were co-produced by Rick Rubin and the band’s Billy F Gibbons and include “I Gotsta Get Paid,” “Chartreuse,” “Over You” and “Consumption.”

“Based on the visibility of the ‘Gotsta Get Paid’ song, we decided to make available more of a taste of the album than just the one song,” said American’s Rubin.

Notes Gibbons, “We were itching to get some new music out before the full album release; making available these four tracks seems like a good way to accomplish that most expeditiously. Dusty, Frank and I are happy with what’s been accomplished in the studio so we figured we’d provide some hot and tasty ‘hors d’oeuvres’ before the main course is served this fall.”

iTunes Release in June

Several media sources have indicated that ZZ will release a four song collection, apparently all from the new album, through iTunes in June. No other info is available at this time. If you find anything please comment.

ZZ Top Mashantucket, CT show review 05/27/2012

Courtesy of Clay G., here is his review of last night's show. Many thanks Clay for your wonderful contributions!

---

The Gang of Outlaws tour rolled into Connecticut on Sunday night May 27th for the third stop of the tour. The vibe was different this night perhaps due to talk of a new album coming soon, a brand new commercial airing for Jeremiah Weed and an opening night report of many deep cuts being rolled out. Are they finally breaking out of the oldies slump? Alas, they came close but ultimately left us wondering yet again. I'll skip Ms. Wilson and 3 Doors Down although they both did nice sets. Everything was running on time tonight. During intermission no playing of Flyin High with about 15 minutes between sets - enough time to check out the merchandise. How sad it is to see ZZ going back to the XXX cover for a tee shirt and just putting the 2012 tour dates on the back. $40? We miss you, Bill Narum. The Z cattle brand or the Pin Cushion voodoo doll would of made a great graphic.
The Foxwood MGM has a huge stage at the Casino, very deep and wide. 3 Doors Down placed the drummer toward the back. Even with 5 guys they seemed lost on the big stage. ZZ set Frank up about half way to the front on the small tear shaped riser with the same brown skull kit and gong which he never uses from previous tours. In front of the drums there is a black floor mat/ rug running almost the length of the stage . First time I have ever seen this. Same two iconic microphone stands as previous tours.
9:00 pm exactly -show time. I have never seen Billy and Dusty milk the opening walk to the microphones so slowly - slow motion. That set the pace for the night - I have never seen less movement from them. The sound was fantastic all night - they nailed it right away on I Thank You. Highlights for me were Mississippi and Vincent. Great to see Nationwide and Cheap off the set list. It would have been a great night except for some reason the boys left out Heaven, Hell or Houston, Sloppy Drunk and BBQ from the set list. Believe it or not they left the stage at 10:06 pm - 66 minutes in total. What a Shame!
A couple of unplanned items - after Jesus Billy says "wait a minute" and he goes off stage for 90 seconds. He comes back and says "I forgot my tuner - but who cares, it's Rock and Roll". A missed opportunity for a bass and or drum solo, instead Dusty and Frank just waited. After Tush during the bows a black dog Franks? ran out on the stage, Billy almost trips over him or her.
Guitars - they start out with the new Jeremiah Weed guitars. Billy goes to a Gibson Melody Maker ( comments that it was his first guitar - although I doubt it had the custom pin striping). Dusty goes to his new black bass. Billy played the encore with a Les Paul. It's funny how he has Bolin make the lightest guitars but yet wears so much junk around his neck.
In summary, looks like a lot of thought has gone into this tour. Same cast ( Elwood, Pedro etc) but all new video, from what we could see in the cheap seats blocked by the speakers . Wonder if something was wrong with one of them last night. This had makings of being spectacular - but 66 minutes, come on guys!
